After more than a decade of sprinkling sugar across Greater Cleveland, Colossal Cupcakes says it will serve its final walk-in customer in North Olmsted on Sunday, July 26. The closure of that last retail storefront will leave the bakery with no public shops, capping years of effort to claw back from damage to its downtown locations.
According to News 5 Cleveland, the business announced that the North Olmsted shop will shut down on July 26. On the company’s website, the North Olmsted address and hours are still listed alongside a note that Colossal has been “Proudly Serving Cleveland for Over a Decade.”
Downtown storefront was heavily damaged in 2020
The bakery’s Euclid Avenue flagship was ransacked during the May 30, 2020 unrest, forcing lengthy repairs and a temporary downtown closure, Cleveland Magazine reported. That blow pushed the company to lean more heavily on its suburban North Olmsted shop and its catering business as it tried to recover.
Legal fallout from the riots
Federal court records show that a defendant smashed Colossal Cupcakes’ windows and entered the store during the May 30, 2020 unrest. He was convicted on Hobbs Act robbery and tampering charges, and the district court ordered restitution. The Sixth Circuit later narrowed part of that restitution related to speculative lost profits, according to court documents reviewed via Justia.
What the business will keep doing
Colossal Cupcakes’ website continues to promote catering, bulk orders and delivery through DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub, indicating the brand plans to keep serving customers without a public storefront. For large or custom orders, the site lists a catering contact and an email for owner Kelly Kandah, per Colossal Cupcakes' website.
News 5 Cleveland noted the closure but did not include a statement from the owner about long-term plans. As Cleveland Magazine has reported, downtown foot traffic and the broader retail climate remain challenging for small operators, pressures that have helped shape the bakery’s shrinking footprint.
