An 85-year-old Tarpon Springs man died yesterday afternoon after his pickup truck veered off County Road 296 just west of Belcher Road and plunged into a nearby Pinellas County retention pond. Emergency crews pulled the driver from the water and rushed him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Troopers say the cause of the crash is still unknown and the investigation is active.
The Florida Highway Patrol reports that the man was driving a Chevy Silverado westbound on County Road 296 around 1 p.m. when he lost control, causing the truck to rotate and end up submerged in the pond. First responders removed the driver from the vehicle and took him to a hospital, and troopers have not yet released his name.
