A summer afternoon at two Oswego public pools took an abrupt turn Friday when staff cleared swimmers from the water and locked the gates as police investigated a reported threat. Civic Center Aquatic Park and Winrock Pool, both run by the Oswegoland Park District, were shut down as a precaution while officers moved in to investigate. Officials stressed the closures were preventive and said there was no sign of an active or ongoing danger.
The Oswego Police Department said on social media that “the threat has not been confirmed” and that officers were “investigating out of an abundance of caution,” according to NBC Chicago. Residents were asked to steer clear of the area while investigators worked. At the time, police told the outlet they had no additional details to release.
What Closed And Where
The Oswegoland Park District operates both pools. Its Summer 2026 Play Book lists Civic Center Aquatic Park at 5 Ashlawn Avenue and Winrock Pool at 21 Winrock Road. The district typically posts program details and facility status on its website. Locations and schedules are laid out in the Oswegoland Park District Play Book. Both sites offer public swim and seasonal programs that usually draw local families and swim teams once the weather warms up.
Why Authorities Move Fast On Threats
In recent months, false threats and “swatting” incidents, which involve hoax calls designed to trigger a heavy emergency response, have led to evacuations and closures at schools, zoos and other crowded spots across the country. Federal investigators have pursued swatting cases and related arrests, and national coverage has warned that such hoaxes can put the public at risk and tie up police and fire crews who might be needed elsewhere. For federal case details and broader context, see the FBI and reporting by AP/WTOP.
What Residents Should Do
Oswego police said the investigation remained active and that they would share updates when they had more to report. Residents with information, tips or concerns can contact the village’s non-emergency dispatch line at 630-554-3426 or email [email protected], according to the Village of Oswego police page. The park district and police have urged residents to follow official channels for word on when the pools will reopen and for any additional safety notices.
