Times Square is about to get a little more enchanted. House of Spells, a U.K.-born multi-fandom retailer, is set to unveil a two-floor, 20,000-square-foot flagship at 234 West 42nd Street on July 29, turning a once-gritty stretch of the Deuce into a full-on fandom playground packed with cinematic sets, selfie-ready scenes and walls of officially licensed gear from Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.
As reported by Commercial Observer, the lease spans roughly 20,000 square feet divided between a street-level floor and a deep lower level. Weisman NYC represented House of Spells in the deal, while Cushman & Wakefield negotiated for the building’s ownership. The outlet quoted House of Spells USA president Jaime Vidal, who said Times Square’s “energy is simply magical” and explained that the company landed on this address after detailed psychographic research.
Inside The 20,000-Square-Foot Emporium
New York Real Estate Journal reports that the store is planning a grand opening for July 29 and that the Times Square flagship is expected to operate every day from 10 a.m. to midnight. The publication also shared praise from Tom Harris of the Times Square Alliance and local officials, who pitched the shop as both a tourist magnet and a family-friendly anchor for the Deuce.
Why The Deuce Still Matters
The block of West 42nd Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues spent decades known more for grindhouse theaters, adult entertainment and crime than souvenir wands and dragon eggs. Over the last thirty years, sustained redevelopment efforts have transformed it into a mainstream entertainment strip, with theater restorations, targeted zoning and public-private projects leading the way. New 42nd Street and urban historians credit those moves with reshaping both the block’s reputation and its tenant mix.
What This Opening Signals For Retail
Industry watchers have tagged the House of Spells lease as one of the more eye-catching retail deals this year, pointing to it as another sign that immersive, experience-heavy concepts are edging out old-school souvenir and candy shops in Midtown. The Real Deal listed the transaction among May’s top retail leases, while the New York Post reported that the Times Square build-out carries a price tag of roughly $5 million and fills space last occupied by Modell’s and IT’Sugar in the Brookfield-and-Madison-owned building.
