A 44-year-old Wake County woman is in custody after investigators used a network of Flock license-plate cameras to follow her vehicle from a child-abduction report in Henderson to Charlotte. The child was taken into protective custody, while authorities have kept details about the case tightly sealed.
According to WRAL, the child was reported missing from Henderson on Monday, and Vance County sheriff's officials worked with Charlotte-Mecklenburg police to track Candice Deyoung's vehicle across county lines. Charlotte police arrested Deyoung on Wednesday, and she was later taken to the Vance County Detention Center, where she is being held without bond on a charge of abduction of children.
How Flock Cameras Helped Track The Vehicle
Flock's system uses automated license-plate readers to capture vehicle sightings and help law enforcement locate cars connected to investigations, according to Flock Safety. In this case, the technology gave investigators a way to follow the vehicle beyond the Henderson area and coordinate with police in Charlotte.
A Similar Child-Recovery Case Involved Flock Technology
The North Carolina arrest comes as Flock cameras receive renewed attention in missing-child investigations. In an Indiana case this month, a Flock alert helped police locate a vehicle linked to an abducted 3-month-old infant, as Hoodline reported.
Deyoung's Next Court Appearance
Deyoung is scheduled for her first court appearance next Monday at 9 a.m., according to WRAL. Police have not disclosed the child's age, identity or relationship to Deyoung, and said no additional information about the child will be released. The charge is an allegation, and the case remains pending in court.
