Weber County residents trying to call in a non-emergency on Monday may have heard nothing but silence. County officials say an outage has taken down Weber Area Dispatch’s non-emergency phone line, although 9-1-1 is still up and running for urgent calls.
The dispatch center is urging people to reserve 9-1-1 strictly for emergencies while technicians work to restore the non-emergency line.
What Officials Posted
According to the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, the outage is affecting the center’s non-emergency number. The department asked residents to monitor its updates while the issue is being fixed and stressed that 9-1-1 is still operating normally for life-threatening situations.
How to Reach Dispatch During the Outage
The Weber Area Dispatch site lists the non-emergency line as 801-395-8221 and an administrative line at 801-395-8234. With the non-emergency line down, officials are urging the public to call 9-1-1 for any urgent matters.
For issues that are not urgent while the phone problem is ongoing, residents can file reports through the Weber County Sheriff’s Office online system instead of calling.
Why 9-1-1 Stayed Online
Public safety experts and federal regulators say that emergency call systems are built with extra backup layers that help keep 9-1-1 available even when other phone lines go down. A recent rulemaking on NG-911 by the Federal Communications Commission highlights network diversity, fallback routing, and other protections designed to keep emergency calls flowing during local outages, according to the Federal Register.
The sheriff’s office is asking residents to keep an eye on its Facebook page and the Weber Area Dispatch website for updates as crews work to restore the non-emergency line. In any life-threatening emergency, officials say to call or text 9-1-1 immediately.
