Courtney Webb has been sentenced to 8 to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of 22-year-old Amareyon Daniels at a Weinland Park apartment complex. The sentencing closes a key chapter in a case that started with a shaky self-defense story and ended with a life term for her co-defendant.
According to NBC4 WCMH-TV, prosecutors dropped Webb’s earlier murder charges when she agreed to plead to the lesser offense. In addition to prison time, she will serve two years of post-release control. Her co-defendant, Shavar Johnson, pleaded guilty to murder in April and received a life sentence.
Columbus police were called shortly after 7:30 a.m. on December 11, 2024, for a report of a person down at the Grant Park Apartments in the 1300 block of North Grant Avenue. Officers found Daniels with apparent stab wounds, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene, according to a Columbus Division of Police release.
Webb and Johnson later told investigators that Daniels had attacked Webb and that Johnson only stepped in to protect her. Security camera footage, however, undercut that version, with investigators saying Webb had already met up with Daniels before Johnson came over and attacked him, NBC4 WCMH-TV reported.
A Self-Defense Claim Fell Apart
Johnson showed up at a nearby hospital minutes after Daniels was found, with Webb behind the wheel driving him there to get treatment for a hand injury. An earlier breakdown of the shifting stories detailed how police initially worked through clashing accounts of the confrontation before investigators said video evidence identified Johnson as the aggressor.
Both Webb and Johnson were first indicted on multiple homicide counts, including aggravated murder. Webb’s plea deal pulled her out of range of a murder conviction, while Johnson’s decision to plead to murder left him facing the far heavier outcome of life in prison.
