Houston’s newest soccer fans will not have to break the bank to see a live match.
Mayor John Whitmire announced Thursday that the city will hand out 10,000 free tickets to first-time attendees at Shell Energy Stadium so Houstonians who caught World Cup fever can see the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash in person. The giveaway begins Saturday and runs through Sept. 26 as part of an effort to convert tournament interest into long-term local support.
As announced by the Houston Dynamo and Dash, the program reserves complimentary seats across six Dynamo home matches and six Dash fixtures, and fans may claim up to two complimentary tickets per online customer using the promo code HOUSTON26. The teams and the mayor's office say tickets will be distributed online and through community organizations, nonprofit partners and youth programs, and that claimed seats cannot be resold.
In a statement on the City of Houston website, Whitmire said, "Every child deserves the chance to fall in love with the game, and every Houstonian should know these clubs belong to them," framing the giveaway as part of the city's post-World Cup plan. The mayor's page adds that thousands of the tickets will be reserved for children and youth programs and that distribution begins immediately while supplies last.

For those ready to test-drive a live match, the process is straightforward. Fans can reserve seats online through Tixr with the promo code HOUSTON26; each online customer can claim up to two complimentary tickets, the teams' announcement says. A portion of the allocations will be routed through community partners and youth programs, and the clubs warn that availability and seating will vary by match.

Whitmire's giveaway echoes similar affordability pushes elsewhere, as city leaders look for ways to turn massive tournaments into something regular residents can actually experience. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani negotiated 1,000 $50 World Cup tickets for New Yorkers, as USA TODAY reported. Local officials say these moves are part of a broader trend among city leaders trying to make major sporting events more accessible to working families.
Upcoming eligible matches
The Dynamo, coming off a 1-1 draw with D.C. United, will host Austin FC in an eligible fixture this weekend, and the Dash's eligible slate begins Aug. 1 at Shell Energy Stadium, according to the Houston Chronicle. Club and city officials say match-by-match availability will be posted online as allocations are claimed.
Jessica O'Neill, president of business operations for the Dynamo and Dash, called the program "one of the greatest legacies the World Cup can leave behind" and said the clubs are "incredibly grateful" to Whitmire for making the initiative possible, per the mayor's announcement. Officials hope giving thousands of Houstonians a first taste of a live match will help grow long-term support for both teams through the rest of the season.
