A late-night run along the Gulf Freeway service road turned fatal Sunday when a young driver lost control of his pickup, smashed into roadside barriers and died at the scene, according to Houston police. The single-vehicle crash shut down part of the southbound service road while investigators documented the wreckage.
The Houston Police Department said the crash happened Sunday on the south Interstate 45 service road at 13700 Gulf Freeway. Investigators said a white Chevrolet 1500 "failed to maintain a single lane," left its lane on the service road, hit a guardrail and then slammed into a light pole. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the driver, described as an approximately 20-year-old man, dead at the scene.
Police said the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is working to confirm the victim's identity and will release his name once family members have been notified. HPD listed Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant A. Patterson and Officer C. Nguyen as the investigating officers and provided a media line at 713-308-3280 for tips as the case remains open.
Investigators Seek Witnesses
Detectives are asking anyone who was driving in the area at the time, especially those with dash-cam video, to come forward to help them reconstruct what led up to the pickup leaving its lane. Even small details about how the truck was moving before impact could help fill in gaps in the investigation.
The Gulf Freeway corridor has seen multiple deadly incidents in recent weeks, including a June 29 work-zone death, as reported by Click2Houston. The string of crashes has kept safety concerns along the busy stretch in the spotlight.

Transportation planners have been eyeing the Gulf Freeway for years as a trouble spot where congestion, design constraints and heavy traffic contribute to serious wrecks and complicate emergency response.
