A 35-year-old Adelanto man was arrested Wednesday after deputies say he engaged in lewd conduct inside the lobby of his own local sheriff's station, then was found carrying methamphetamine and a glass pipe when he walked outside. Carlos Abel Meza now faces charges of indecent exposure, drug possession with prior offenses, and possession of drug paraphernalia following the incident at the Victor Valley Sheriff's Station.
According to the Victorville Daily Press, deputies received a report of indecent exposure in the lobby of the station at 11613 Bartlett Avenue in Adelanto shortly before noon on Wednesday. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said a male subject was allegedly engaging in lewd conduct in the lobby, per the agency's statement to the paper. Deputies followed the man as he walked out of the building and arrested him there.
During that arrest, deputies reportedly found a small bag of suspected methamphetamine in Meza's pocket, along with a glass pipe. He was booked on suspicion of indecent exposure, drug possession involving two or more prior offenses, and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $60,000, the newspaper's report notes.
What the Charges Actually Carry
A first-time indecent exposure conviction under California Penal Code Section 314 is typically a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in county jail and/or a $1,000 fine, according to the Shouse Law Group. But any conviction under that statute also triggers mandatory sex offender registration under Penal Code Section 290 for a minimum of ten years, placing misdemeanor indecent exposure in California's Tier 1 registration category.
The methamphetamine possession charge Meza faces allegedly involves two or more prior offenses. Simple possession is generally prosecuted as a misdemeanor, but the Law Office of Kristine Koo explains that defendants with two or more qualifying prior drug convictions can face enhanced felony charges or mandatory treatment structures under state drug statutes and the Proposition 36 framework. The glass pipe was found in his pocket.
A Station With a History of Security Incidents
The Victor Valley Sheriff's Station serves as Adelanto's contract police department while also covering unincorporated desert communities including Helendale, Oro Grande, Silver Lakes, and Wrightwood, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
This is not the station's first unusual security episode. In October 2022, a 16-year-old entered the station's gated lot armed with two loaded handguns fitted with high-capacity magazines before deputies disarmed him, as reported by the Victor Valley News Group. The sheriff's department's office space is at the Bartlett Avenue location.
