A Homecoming Built on "Africa, Plus More"
That mission traces back to founder Michael Awosanya, a DMV-area native who built Afro Plus Fest around the ethos "Africa, plus more," blending Afrobeats, Dancehall, Hip-Hop, Amapiano, Soca, and R&B into one bill, according to The Washington Informer. The 2026 edition is being staged in official partnership with the Prince George's County Executive Office, with County Executive Aisha Braveboy pointing to the festival's expected impact on local tourism and small business growth, the outlet reports.
Those civic ties come amid dramatic growth for the festival itself. Organizers project turnout of up to 120,000 fans across the three days at Northwest Stadium, with daily attendance capped at roughly 40,000 people across two main stages, per PR Newswire. That's a steep climb from the festival's 2025 debut, when a sold-out crowd of 20,000 packed D.C.'s RFK Festival Grounds for a single day and generated an estimated $10 million in local economic impact.
Tickets, Vendors, and a DMV Stage
Three-day passes for the 2026 event went on sale with General Admission starting at $199, while VIP and Platinum packages climb as high as $499, according to That Eric Alper.
The expanded footprint also means a bigger vendor village. Plans call for more than 80 global food vendors and 40 merchandise stalls dedicated to Black-owned businesses, plus a local stage segment spotlighting DMV artists including Mannywellz and Foggie Raw, according to a PR Newswire release.
Northwest Stadium's New Name, Same Big Bowl
The festival's new home has its own recent history. Northwest Stadium in Landover is the year-round home of the NFL's Washington Commanders and seats roughly 62,000 to 65,000 spectators, according to SeatGeek.
The venue only took its current name in August 2024, when Northwest Federal Credit Union struck a naming rights deal that replaced decades of branding as FedExField, per the Coliseum Global Sports Venue Alliance.

Awosanya has framed the expansion as part of a bigger industry shift. In a July interview, he said growing live diaspora festivals like his is vital for African and Black creators looking to secure ownership, fair monetization, and distribution rights for their work, according to Forbes Africa.
