A new tequila-forward restaurant has opened its doors on the corner of West 11th Street and the Flats East Bank waterfront, taking over the space Beerhead Bar & Eatery left behind. Agave Social Kitchen, located at 1156 W. 11th St. in Cleveland, seats about 180 people across a dining room, a 20-seat backlit onyx bar, and patios on two sides of the building.
The restaurant is the work of Tres Portillos, a regional group with more than three dozen locations that also runs Blue Agave on East 4th Street and Tacologist in University Circle, according to Cleveland.com. Tres Portillos owns the Agave Social brand outright, and the Flats location leans hard into its namesake spirit, offering a broad selection of tequila brands alongside 14 tequila-forward cocktails. Beyond the drink menu, the kitchen turns out a modern Mexican spread built for sharing, including queso, guacamole, Baja tuna tostadas, and birria, fish and shrimp street tacos.
Tequila Flights With a Side of Education
Rather than treating tequila as an afterthought, Agave Social built its identity around teaching diners how to drink it properly. Its tequila flights come with three 1.5-ounce pours and printed tasting notes, designed to introduce guests to flavors from different tequila brands and styles, per the same Cleveland.com report.
“Tequila is more than a shot that you throw back with little thought,” John-Paul Farah said, according to the outlet. Farah added that good tequila should be sipped neat at room temperature, and that people appreciate the spirit more when they understand what they are drinking. That philosophy tracks with where the category is heading nationally: the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States reported 32.2 million 9-liter cases of tequila and mezcal sold across the country in 2024, and beverage analyst IWSR found that even as overall U.S. tequila volumes flattened through 2025, ultra-premium tequila grew 7% year-over-year to claim 17% of the market.
The food menu isn't an afterthought either. The Mexican City taco combines grilled steak, chorizo, roasted pineapple and avocado, while the Social Smashburger is built with beef patties, American cheese, house avocado mayo and a flame-charred chile toreado. Agave Social opens at 11 a.m. for lunch and runs happy hour from 2 to 5 p.m., with closing times stretching from 9 p.m. on Sundays to midnight or later on Fridays and Saturdays, and 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Filling a Corner Vacant Since 2025
The site itself carries some history. Beerhead Bar & Eatery closed in January 2025 after operating in the corner space for nearly a decade, part of the original wave of Flats East Bank Phase II tenants. Agave Social's arrival finally fills that high-visibility corner after more than a year of vacancy.
That gap was part of a rougher stretch for the district. In late 2025, Flats East Bank lost several nightlife and dining staples, including Inferno, Rum Runners, and Margaritaville, closures attributed to rising operational costs and a seasonal drop in winter traffic, as reported by WKYC. A Broader Summer Rebound Along the River
Agave Social's debut fits into a wider reshuffling of the Flats East Bank waterfront this summer. Across the Cuyahoga River on the West Bank, longtime waterfront fixture Shooters reopened in March 2026 after renovations that included a new boat dock, per NEOtrans, suggesting the investment wave isn't limited to the East Bank alone. The financial picture for the district's underlying real estate remains more complicated: in July 2026, an Illinois lender filed a $1.7 million lawsuit against the Wolstein family trust over loans tied to Flats East Bank, a dispute Hoodline reported stems from shifting management dynamics following developer Scott Wolstein's death.
Before serving its first drinks, Agave Social Kitchen also had to clear a municipal hurdle. A liquor permit transfer application for the 1156 West 11th Street address was formally submitted to Cleveland City Council for Ward 7 approval in early August, according to public records, covering the downtown and Flats waterfront district ahead of the restaurant's opening.
