An Austin police officer exchanged gunfire with an armed suspect Wednesday morning in the 800 block of Camino La Costa, triggering a SWAT standoff that forced a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents and shut down northbound Interstate 35 frontage road lanes during the morning commute. No officers, bystanders, or the suspect were injured in the gunfire, and the suspect was taken into custody roughly 90 minutes after the shooting began.
The incident started as a 911 call reporting a person held at gunpoint, according to KVUE. The caller reported sitting in his car when an armed suspect approached, punched him in the face, pointed a gun at him, and struck him with the weapon. Austin police officers arrived at the scene within four minutes of the dispatch, the station reported. The Austin Police Department confirmed on social media that it was investigating an officer-involved shooting at the location and said a media briefing on the incident would follow, with the time and location still to be determined at the time of the post.
Suspect Opened Fire Before Fleeing Into His Apartment
Officers located a suspect matching the 911 caller's description about 50 feet away, and the suspect took cover behind a parked vehicle and opened fire at an officer, per the same KVUE account. Officers returned fire before the suspect fled into his own apartment. Police said no other individuals were present in the parking lot during the exchange of gunfire.
APD SWAT officers responded to the scene and issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents around 9:15 a.m., the station's report notes. The suspect was taken into custody without injury at approximately 9:50 a.m. Police initial reports had tentatively indicated the suspect might be injured before authorities confirmed he suffered no injuries.
I-35 Frontage Road Shut Down for Morning Commute
The Texas Department of Transportation temporarily closed all northbound Interstate 35 frontage road lanes just north of U.S. Highway 290 because of the nearby police activity, reopening the roadway around 10:16 a.m., according to the same KVUE report. The 800 block of Camino La Costa sits immediately east of the I-35 corridor, which meant the standoff rippled directly into the morning drive for commuters passing through the area.
The block is located in the St. Johns neighborhood of Northeast Austin, a mixed residential area near major arterial highways where police had also responded to a family disturbance call on August 4, according to MySA.
Police Chief Confirms No Injuries, Officer on Leave
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis held a media briefing at 10:45 a.m. at the Sterling Events Center, confirming that no officers or bystanders were injured and that the officer involved had been placed on administrative leave, per KVUE's reporting. Administrative leave is standard protocol following any firearm discharge by an APD officer.
