Austin is starting Monday under mostly cloudy skies and temperatures around 79 degrees, but the clouds will not last. The city is headed for a high near 101, with the heat index reaching 106 as mostly sunny skies take over. It is another day to schedule outdoor plans early, before the afternoon turns punishing.
Triple-Digit Heat Takes Over By Afternoon
Temperatures should climb through the 80s by late morning and reach their peak from midafternoon into early evening. Winds will stay light from the south and southeast at around 0 to 5 mph, and rain is not expected Monday. The National Weather Service lists no watches, warnings, or advisories for the Austin area.
Monday night will offer little relief, with mostly clear skies and a low around 78. Tuesday and Wednesday will keep the same basic pattern, with sunny or mostly sunny skies, highs near 100 and light winds. The overnight warmth will make it harder for homes, bodies, and pavement to cool down.
Storm Chances Return Later In The Week
The extended forecast adds a chance of showers and thunderstorms late Wednesday night, followed by a 30% chance Thursday and lower storm chances Friday through Sunday. Thursday could still reach 99 degrees, while Friday and Sunday are expected to top out near 99 and Saturday near 98. In other words, any rain that arrives will be more of an interruption than a true cooldown.
The new outlook extends the triple-digit stretch described in Hoodline's weekend forecast, while adding a more noticeable storm window later in the week. Forecasters expect the better storm chances to stay east and southeast of Austin along the Coastal Plains, so rainfall could remain scattered across the metro area.
Plan Around The Hottest Hours
People working or exercising outside should aim for the morning or evening, drink water regularly, and take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade. Check on older adults, children, neighbors and pets, and never leave anyone in a parked vehicle. Even without a formal heat advisory, a 106-degree heat index and light winds call for serious caution during the afternoon.
