Austin is starting Tuesday in the upper 70s under clear skies, but the morning calm is a brief prelude to a dangerous afternoon. Temperatures are expected to rocket to 105°F, with a heat index near 107°F, as a Heat Advisory covers Travis County through 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Heat Advisory Covers Tuesday And Wednesday

The National Weather Service expects sunny skies Tuesday with south winds around 5 mph and little chance of rain. Tonight will only fall to about 79 degrees, and the heat index could remain as high as 106. Wednesday brings another high near 105, with heat-index values reaching 109.

This is a sharper update to Hoodline’s earlier heat report, with the advisory now in effect across Travis and surrounding Central Texas counties. The warning notes that hot temperatures may cause heat illness, particularly for people spending extended time outdoors.

Rain Chances Finally Return Thursday

Austin’s first meaningful rain chances of the week arrive Thursday, when the high should still reach 102 degrees. The forecast calls for a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially from 1 to 4 p.m. and continuing into the evening. Any storms that form could bring gusty winds and lightning, even though widespread rain is not expected.

Friday looks slightly cooler at around 100 degrees, with a 20% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The chance of rain drops again over the weekend, when Saturday should be sunny near 100 and Sunday and Monday remain sunny near 99.

Cooling Breaks Matter In This Stretch

Residents should drink water regularly, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on neighbors who may be more vulnerable to heat illness. The City of Austin says Austin Public Library and Parks facilities can serve as cooling centers during normal operating hours, though residents should verify hours before heading out.

Never leave children, older adults or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a short errand. With overnight lows stuck in the upper 70s, air conditioning and shaded breaks will remain important well after sunset.
