Award-Winning Comedy Duo Couplet Brings Jewish Wedding Musical to Kihei

A Los Angeles comedy duo is bringing their real-life wedding chaos — including a venue that burned down in a wildfire, a bed bug infestation, and a rocky stint in couples therapy — to the stage in Kihei next month. Couplet, the married act made up of Marnina Schon and Micah O'Konis, will perform their acclaimed musical comedy Honey Honey Moon Moon at ProArts Playhouse on September 26, marking the show's Hawaiʻi debut.

The performance is part of Maui's Pono Project, a county-backed series of live arts and culture events, according to Maui Now. Tickets are subsidized, with discounted prices ranging from $11 to $26.50, per ProArts Playhouse, which operates the Kihei community theater hosting the show.

Honey Honey Moon Moon runs about an hour and follows a queer Jewish wedding that almost didn't happen, according to the seed reporting. The musical comedy draws directly from Schon and O'Konis's own wedding prep mishaps in Los Angeles, which included their original venue burning down in a wildfire, a bed bug infestation, and a high-conflict couples therapy process, according to ThreeWeeks Edinburgh.

From Real Honeymoon to Fringe Circuit Success

The couple actually spent a month of their real honeymoon performing the show in Edinburgh, per Maui Now's reporting. That commitment paid off: Honey Honey Moon Moon won the Transcendent Craft Award and the Splash Award in 2025, and picked up nominations for the Adelaide Fringe Exchange Award and the Best Comedy and Variety Act Fringe Award in both 2025 and 2026, along with an International Fringe Award nomination in 2026, according to the same Maui Now account.

Schon, who sings and plays violin during Couplet's live sets, has acted at major U.S. regional theaters including South Coast Rep, Center Theatre Group, and Berkeley Rep, and co-starred alongside Henry Winkler in the international television comedy series Chanshi, according to the Jewish Writers Institute. O'Konis, a USC-trained classical composer who plays guitar in their performances, writes for the Upright Citizens Brigade, records indie-folk music under the name Lookalike, and co-created the political musical comedy Good Guy With A Gun, per ThreeWeeks Edinburgh.

Directing Team Known for Death Comedy Hit

Honey Honey Moon Moon was directed by Eric Michaud and Chris Grace, who are themselves husbands, according to Maui Now. The pair previously collaborated on the solo show Sardines (a comedy about death), which Grace wrote and performed under Michaud's direction at the Edinburgh Fringe and regional theaters in 2024 and 2025, according to the Huntington Theatre Company. Grace is also known for his television role on NBC's Superstore.

Part of a Broader Push for Inclusion on Maui

The Pono Project describes itself as a series of live arts and culture events aimed at educating people on Maui's history and challenges while celebrating the diversity of the local community and promoting inclusion of marginalized groups, according to Maui Now. The initiative is bolstered by partnerships with other Maui nonprofits and receives municipal backing through grants from the County of Maui's Office of Economic Development, per ProArts Playhouse.

Earlier 2026 installments of the series included a Juneteenth Joy celebration, AAPI Heritage Month musical showcases, a Lei Day cultural performance, and the Ka Lima O Maui Shining Stars Showcase for artists with disabilities, according to ProArts Playhouse. The Honey Honey Moon Moon performance adds a Jewish heritage entry to that year-round lineup.

Maui is home to an estimated 2,500 to 3,500 Jewish residents, served primarily by the non-denominational Jewish Congregation of Maui, known as Beit Shalom in Kihei, and Chabad of Maui, according to eJewishPhilanthropy. Since debuting Honey Honey Moon Moon, Couplet has developed a second full-hour musical comedy, Folk Marry Kill, which premiered at the Hollywood Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe in 2026 and explores themes of long-term monogamy and mortality, according to Jewish Renaissance. For now, though, the September 26 Kihei date marks a first for the duo: their debut performance anywhere in Hawaiʻi.
