Baltimore is starting Sunday warm and muggy, with temperatures near 78 degrees before a stormy day takes over. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to become more widespread late this morning and continue into the evening, with a 90% chance of rain.
Heavy Rain And Storms Could Continue Into Monday
The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington says a Flood Watch is posted through this evening for parts of central Maryland. The main concerns are flash flooding, especially in urban and poorly drained areas, along with damaging wind gusts and a few brief tornadoes.
Rainfall could total a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch during the day, followed by another three-quarters to 1 inch tonight. Repeated thunderstorms over the same location could produce much higher localized totals, while south winds of 5 to 12 mph may gust to 23 mph and stronger storms could bring isolated gusts of 30 to 50 mph.
Storms Linger Before Heat Returns
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue Sunday night, with a low around 74 and rain chances lingering until roughly 3 a.m. Monday. Monday should turn mostly sunny and hotter, reaching about 90 degrees, although an isolated shower or thunderstorm could pop up after 4 p.m.
Tuesday looks sunny with a high near 88, followed by another sunny 90-degree day Wednesday. Shower and thunderstorm chances return Wednesday night and continue at times Thursday through Saturday, when highs should settle in the mid-80s.
Sunday Plans May Need A Backup
Anyone driving during the heaviest rain should avoid flooded roads and never attempt to cross moving water. Boaters should also note that Small Craft Advisories are scheduled for area waters from Sunday afternoon into early Monday, while outdoor events may need a quick route indoors if thunder develops.
