A 48-year-old man is in custody after Baltimore police say he stole a motorcycle, cut the victim’s arm with a pocketknife, then jumped into the Inner Harbor and swam beneath a bridge. Fire Department water-rescue crews helped pull him out, capping a chaotic escape attempt that began in Fells Point.
According to WBAL-TV, Baltimore police units were called Sunday to the 2800 block of Boston Street for a report of a stolen motorcycle. Investigators say the 33-year-old victim and the suspect got into an altercation over the bike, and the suspect cut the victim’s arm before fleeing toward the water.
The harbor has become a recurring flashpoint for Baltimore’s two-wheel traffic and enforcement headaches. In April, Hoodline reported that dozens of dirt bikes moved through Light Street and into the Inner Harbor, prompting a police response after a crash call.
The incident also follows earlier efforts to crack down on illegal scooters and related crimes. In a 2024 release, the Baltimore Police Department said its Motors and Inner Harbor units issued 42 traffic citations, towed 25 illegal scooters and investigated 19 scooter-related robberies and carjackings during one enforcement initiative.
The Harbor Search Ended Under A Bridge
Police found the suspect under a bridge in the Inner Harbor, and fire-rescue personnel assisted in bringing him back to shore, according to WBAL-TV’s account. Police said he will be taken to Central Booking and charged with auto theft.
Auto Theft Case Moves Forward
The case remains at the arrest stage, and the allegations are not a conviction. Prosecutors and the courts will determine what formal charges move forward and how the case proceeds.
