Houston shoppers near the Astrodome are set to get another bargain-hunting destination, with dd’s DISCOUNTS planning a new store on Kirby Drive. Construction is expected to begin in September, with the location projected to open in early 2027.
A filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation lists a 25,112-square-foot renovation with an estimated $850,000 price tag. The privately funded project is scheduled to start September 21 and reach completion January 22, 2027.
Former Shoe Palace Site Gets A New Retail Run
The store is planned for a building that formerly housed Shoe Palace, according to Community Impact. The retailer currently has one other Houston location inside the Loop near Magnolia Park, making the Astrodome-area project a notable expansion of its local footprint.
What dd’s DISCOUNTS Shoppers Can Expect
dd’s DISCOUNTS says its first store opened in 2004 and that the chain is part of the Ross family of retailers. Its stores carry apparel, shoes, home decor, accessories and toys, with new merchandise arriving regularly, according to the company’s official company history.
The bargain format is built around lower prices rather than a precious shopping experience: Ross Stores says dd’s merchandise is generally priced 20% to 70% below regular prices at moderate department and discount stores. That range covers everything from clothing and footwear to home goods, giving the upcoming Houston store a broad lane in the city’s value-focused retail market, according to the company’s 2026 annual report.
A Second Houston Store Is On The Way
With the new location, dd’s DISCOUNTS would have two Houston stores, Community Impact reports. The January completion date is still a projection, and the company has not announced opening-day details or store hours for the Kirby Drive location.
