Bayou City Broils at 95 as Pop-Up Storms Crash Friday Afternoon

Houston is waking up to partly cloudy skies and temperatures around 82 degrees Friday morning, but the city is headed for another furnace-like afternoon. Highs should reach 95, with humidity pushing the heat index to about 101, while a small chance of showers and thunderstorms hangs around before 7 a.m. and returns later in the day.

Afternoon Heat Comes With A Brief Storm Risk

According to NWS Houston/Galveston, Friday will turn sunny for much of the day, with a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Any rain should be spotty, but stronger storms could still bring a brief downpour, lightning and gusty winds.

Rain coverage may be a little better closer to the coast, where a weakening boundary and the afternoon sea breeze could help spark storms. For most of inland Houston, the odds remain low enough that many neighborhoods may stay dry.

Winds will stay light at roughly 0 to 5 mph from the northeast during the day before turning southerly Friday night. Temperatures will dip only to around 79 degrees, and the storm chance should fade by about 8 p.m., leaving mostly clear skies.

Weekend Heat Sticks Around

Saturday looks nearly identical, with a high near 95 and a 20% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Sunday is the driest bet of the weekend, bringing sunny skies, a high near 94 and a mostly clear night with a low around 78.

Next Week Keeps The Summer Pattern Going

Monday through Thursday will keep highs in the low to mid-90s, with afternoon storm chances returning at roughly 30% Monday and Wednesday and 40% Tuesday. Most nights remain warm, with lows near 79, so the overnight hours will offer only limited relief.

With a heat index near 101 and little wind, outdoor plans will be more manageable earlier in the morning or after sunset. The National Weather Service is urging residents to practice heat safety, and no watches, warnings or advisories are listed for the Houston area in the current outlook.
