A driver is in critical condition after a high-speed crash on Helbig Road in Beaumont sent his vehicle into another car, flipped it, and then slammed it into a tree Saturday evening. Beaumont Police Department officers were dispatched to the 7200 block of Helbig Road at approximately 5:11 p.m. for what was reported as a major traffic accident.
Dispatch received reports that a vehicle had overturned and that the driver was unresponsive, according to KFDM. Investigators say the crash began when the driver, traveling at a high rate of speed, struck the rear of another vehicle. The impact caused the driver's car to overturn before it left the roadway and slammed into a tree.
Officers arriving on scene found an adult male driver, who was the sole occupant of his vehicle, and immediately began providing emergency medical aid. EMS personnel later took over medical treatment, and the driver was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle that was struck was not injured, per the same report.
Traffic Unit and Crime Scene Unit Investigate
Both the Beaumont Police Department's Crime Scene Unit and Traffic Unit responded to the scene to document the crash and work to determine the circumstances that led to the collision. The Traffic Unit is the department division specifically tasked with investigating traffic-related fatalities and major accidents citywide, a mandate that covers the department's 188 authorized patrol officers spread across an 85-square-mile city with more than 750 miles of roadway, according to the Beaumont Police Department. The investigation remains ongoing, and police say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Whether speed alone caused the driver to lose control, or whether some other factor was involved, has not been determined publicly. The Helbig Road crash adds to a string of severe wrecks in Beaumont this year. Just over a week earlier, on August 21, a driver was critically injured and trapped inside a vehicle after crashing more than halfway into a home on Irving Avenue, requiring hydraulic extrication tools from Beaumont Fire-Rescue Services. In June, a 7-year-old child died in a head-on collision on College Street after a vehicle accelerated through an intersection and crossed the median into oncoming traffic, prompting a full Traffic Unit investigation.
State crash data underscores why Jefferson County roads draw such scrutiny. An analysis of 2025 Texas Department of Transportation crash data found Jefferson County had a per-capita traffic fatality rate of 17.33 per 100,000 residents, more than three times the rate seen in larger suburban counties like Collin County, according to Angel Reyes & Associates. In 2024 alone, TxDOT figures show Jefferson County recorded 43 fatal crashes resulting in 45 deaths, along with 3,926 total reported motor vehicle accidents in Beaumont.
Speed is a recurring factor in the state's worst wrecks. Statewide in 2024, speeding contributed to 35% of all traffic-related deaths in Texas and was identified in 158,364 collisions, nearly 29% of all crashes recorded that year, per an analysis of Texas speeding accident data. Texas has recorded at least one traffic fatality on its roadways every single day since November 7, 2000, a grim streak that has led TxDOT and local agencies to maintain the #EndTheStreakTX safety campaign, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
