BMW Slams NYPD Cruiser on Bruckner Expressway, Sends It Flipping Into Flames

An NYPD cruiser flipped over and burst into flames on the Bruckner Expressway in the Bronx early Friday morning after a BMW slammed into the back of it, sending two officers scrambling out of the burning vehicle before it was engulfed. Both officers were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries and were listed in stable condition. The BMW driver stayed at the scene.

The crash happened around 1 a.m. Friday near East 144th Street in Mott Haven, according to police cited by Eyewitness News. Police say the BMW rear-ended the patrol cruiser, causing it to overturn and catch fire on the highway. Responders on scene launched a hazmat response due to the involvement of an electric vehicle in the crash, according to The Legal Advocate, which notes that vehicle fires involving electric battery systems often require specialized containment procedures to address thermal runaway risks.

What New York's Move Over Law Requires Near Stopped Cruisers

The crash site falls within NYPD's 40th Precinct, which handles preliminary collision reporting across the South Bronx neighborhoods of Mott Haven, Melrose, and Port Morris, per the Cohan Law Firm. Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1144-a, known as the Move Over Law, drivers approaching a stopped emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights must move over a full lane if it's safe to do so, or slow down — a violation carries 3 points on a license and fines up to $450, according to the Ronald S. Cook, PC law firm. The statute traces back to 2010's Ambrose-Searles Move Over Act, passed after the line-of-duty traffic deaths of police and sheriff personnel.

Lawmakers have since widened those protections. Effective March 27, 2024, the state expanded the law to require motorists to slow down or change lanes when approaching any disabled or stopped vehicle on highway shoulders, including ordinary passenger cars, per Munley Law. Governor Kathy Hochul signed that expansion in late 2023 to combat rising roadside collision rates on state parkways and interstates. Separately, state lawmakers have introduced legislation to raise Move Over Law penalties to 5 license points, after New York recorded 322 vehicle intrusions into Department of Transportation work zones in 2024 that killed two workers and injured more than 130, according to the Post Journal.

A Corridor With a Long History of Severe Crashes

South Bronx's Community District 1, which includes the Mott Haven stretch of the Bruckner Expressway, consistently ranks among New York City's top five most dangerous community districts for traffic-related injuries and fatalities, according to AEE Law. High truck volumes and complex highway interconnections contribute to the frequency of serious incidents there. In 2023 alone, the Bruckner Expressway logged 333 total motor vehicle collisions across its Bronx segments, resulting in 3 fatalities and 164 injuries, per Chopra & Nocerino.

The highway has seen deadly crashes involving NYPD vehicles before. In September 2014, 25-year-old NYPD Officer Michael Williams was killed and eight other officers were injured when a patrol van collided with a highway divider on the Bruckner Expressway while traveling to a special detail in Manhattan, according to Newsday. High-speed collisions on the corridor have also produced severe fires in the past — a July 2020 six-car crash left four vehicles ablaze and caused two fatalities, the Bronx Times reported at the time.

Citywide Traffic Deaths Have Been Falling

The overnight crash comes against a backdrop of overall improvement in the city's traffic safety numbers. New York City recorded 205 traffic fatalities in 2025, a 19 percent drop from 2024, and that downward trend continued into early 2026 with first-quarter traffic deaths falling another 7 percent year-over-year, according to ThatCarHitMe.com. Motor vehicle occupant fatalities specifically fell 20 percent in early 2026 under the city's ongoing Vision Zero street initiatives, the same data shows.

It remains unclear whether the BMW driver, who stayed at the scene, will face charges. It's also not yet known which precinct the injured officers were assigned to, or what specific role the electric vehicle's power system played in triggering the hazmat response during fire suppression. The crash is the latest in a string of incidents involving NYPD patrol vehicles that Hoodline has tracked this year, including an NYPD cruiser rammed in Gravesend in April.
