Houston police are investigating after officers found a body in a wooded area near Buffalo Bayou in West Houston on Friday morning. The Houston Police Department said officers received the call around 8:55 a.m. in the 10400 block of Deerwood Road, where the wooded terrain runs alongside the bayou.
According to Click2Houston, HPD is still investigating reports of the body found in the wooded area, and the case remains a developing story as detectives work to gather more information. The outlet, whose report was compiled by logistics coordinator Christian Hudspeth, has not yet released details on the identity of the person found or the circumstances surrounding the death. Police have not said whether foul play is suspected.
A Familiar Stretch of Bayou Trail
The 10400 block of Deerwood Road sits in West Houston's Westchase District near Briarforest, where the corridor runs parallel to Buffalo Bayou and connects directly into the hike-and-bike trails that feed Terry Hershey Park, according to local reporting reviewed by REJournals. The area is a mix of apartment complexes and wooded creek beds hugging the bayou's edge, the kind of terrain that has drawn both trail users and, at times, difficult discoveries over the years.
The Houston Chronicle has reported that the Deerwood Road corridor underwent major infrastructure upgrades in recent years, including road reconstruction, dedicated bike lanes tying into Terry Hershey Park, and new waterfront residential developments along the bayou. That growth has turned a once-quiet stretch into a busier residential and recreational zone, meaning more foot traffic now passes near the wooded bayou edges where remains are sometimes found.
Part of a Larger, Painful Pattern
Friday's discovery adds to what has become a grim and closely watched trend across Houston. Medical examiner records show at least 34 bodies were recovered from Houston-area bayous and waterways in 2025, matching 2024's total of 35 deaths and marking the deadliest two-year stretch for local waterway recoveries on record, according to UNILAD.
A separate review of Harris County medical examiner records by Click2Houston found that at least 189 bodies were recovered from Houston bayous between 2017 and early this year, with roughly 40 percent — at least 75 cases — ultimately ruled undetermined as to cause and manner of death. Officials say those undetermined rulings often stem from decomposition or environmental exposure that obscures physical evidence of what happened. A Houston Chronicle analysis of the same period, cited by LADbible, found that about 85 percent of individuals recovered from Houston bayous were male, with Black men over age 35 forming the single largest demographic group, even in neighborhoods where Black residents are a minority.
Officials Push Back on Serial Killer Rumors
The steady drumbeat of bayou recoveries has fueled persistent online speculation about a serial killer targeting the city. Houston Mayor John Whitmire and District Attorney Sean Teare issued public statements late last year addressing that speculation directly, saying forensic evidence pointed to separate, unlinked causes such as drownings, accidents, suicides and medical emergencies rather than a single perpetrator, per UNILAD. Hoodline reported on that same pushback in September, when officials were pushing back against serial killer rumors following a sixth body found that year.
Under Article 49.25 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is legally required to conduct medicolegal death investigations and autopsies for all sudden, unnatural or suspicious deaths in the county. That means an active police response to an outdoor death scene, like the one on Deerwood Road, does not by itself confirm foul play — a determination on cause and manner of death typically follows once the medical examiner completes forensic testing.
Recent Cases Show a Routine Response
HPD's handling of Friday's discovery mirrors several recent outdoor death investigations in the Houston area. In May, a City of Houston police news release said homicide detectives investigated a deceased male pulled from Greens Bayou near the 13200 block of East Freeway after fishermen spotted the body, a case Hoodline covered in a report titled Body Pulled From Greens Bayou Rattles Cloverleaf Neighborhood. Days earlier, Harris County Sheriff's deputies investigated a decomposed body found in a wooded area near Spears Road in North Harris County after a passerby stumbled upon the remains, according to KHOU.
Similar wooded discoveries date back over a decade in this same watershed. An HPD press release from September 2014 recorded that a citizen walking a dog discovered a deceased male in a heavily wooded area off Sherwood Forest near Addicks Dam, along the upper Buffalo Bayou corridor. As with Friday's case, police have not confirmed the identity of the person found near Deerwood Road, and no cause of death has been released. Click2Houston said it plans to gather more details as the investigation continues.
