A routine traffic stop on Bratenahl’s stretch of I-90 turned into a three-car crash Monday night when another vehicle struck an Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser, injuring the trooper inside. The trooper and another driver were taken to University Hospital, while all three drivers were reported to have mild injuries.
The collision happened around 9:24 p.m. Monday near mile marker 178 on westbound I-90, where the trooper was conducting a stop that blocked the roadway, according to Cleveland19 News. The impact pushed the cruiser into the car that had been pulled over, turning a roadside safety maneuver into a chain reaction involving three vehicles.
Another I-90 Warning For Northeast Ohio Drivers
The scene is part of a broader safety problem on the interstate. In May, two ODOT crews were hit in separate crashes on I-90 in Euclid only minutes apart, and Hoodline reported that state officials again urged drivers to slow down and move over around flashing lights.
For the Bratenahl crash, OSHP said the trooper was taken to University Hospital Main Campus, treated and released. The driver of the stopped car was also taken there for treatment, while the driver who hit the cruiser remained at the scene with minor injuries, Cleveland19 reported.
Ohio’s Move Over Rule Applies
The initial report did not identify any charges, and troopers said the crash remains under investigation. Ohio’s Move Over law requires drivers approaching stationary public-safety or road-service vehicles with flashing lights to change lanes when it is safe, or slow down and proceed with due caution, as outlined in the Ohio Revised Code.
