Bronx Man Slashed on Southbound 2 Train, Suspect Flees at Bronx Park East

A 31-year-old man was slashed in the arm early Monday, August 17, aboard a southbound 2 train after a verbal dispute with a stranger who pulled out a sharp object mid-argument. The attack happened around 5:50 a.m., and the victim got off the train at the Bronx Park East station while his attacker slipped away and remains unidentified.

According to NYPD Crime Stoppers, the unidentified man engaged the victim in a verbal dispute before displaying an unknown sharp object and slashing his arm. The suspect stayed aboard the train after the attack before fleeing to parts unknown, police said. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $3,500 for information leading to an arrest and indictment, and anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or send a direct message to @NYPDTips.

The Bronx Park East station, where the victim exited, is an elevated local stop on the IRT White Plains Road Line at Birchall Avenue and Sagamore Street in the Van Nest section of the Bronx, served at all times by the 2 train, per NYC.gov. The station falls under NYPD Transit District 12, headquartered at 460 Morris Park Avenue across from the East 180th Street station, which oversees subway security across parts of the central and northern Bronx.

A Station With a Troubled Recent History

This is not the first violent incident tied to this stretch of the 2 line. A year earlier, in August 2025, a 39-year-old woman was arrested and charged with attempted murder after slashing a 33-year-old man in the neck during a dispute aboard a southbound 2 train approaching the same station, according to News 12 Bronx. That victim survived after treatment at Jacobi Hospital. Just weeks before this latest slashing, police also responded to a fatal shooting on August 3 at Birchall Avenue and Sagamore Street, right outside the station's mezzanine, with the victim found near an auto sales shop close to the entrance, as reported by the Norwood News.

Felony Assaults Still Elevated Despite Falling Crime Overall

Citywide, subway crime dropped in 2025 compared to the year before, but felony assaults in the transit system have surged 106.6% compared to pre-pandemic levels, climbing from 380 incidents in 2019 to 593 in 2025, according to Vital City. Felony assault has been the primary driver of major crime increases per rider over that span. NYPD's own monthly transit data show 50 felony assaults recorded system-wide in January 2026, unchanged from the 50 reported in January 2025, with system-wide major felonies rising slightly to 174 from 164 during the same month.

In December, Governor Kathy Hochul announced New York State had committed an additional $77 million to maintain enhanced NYPD subway patrols and station safety initiatives through 2026, extending joint state and city safety efforts first launched in 2022. Whether that funding reaches patrols along the White Plains Road corridor where Monday's slashing occurred remains an open question.

Charges the Suspect Could Face

Under New York Penal Law § 120.05, intentionally slashing or stabbing someone with a dangerous instrument is classified as Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D violent felony carrying a mandatory minimum of two years and up to seven years in state prison. Second-degree assault charges apply whenever physical injury is inflicted with a weapon or sharp object, though no arrest has been made and the suspect has not been identified.

Detectives have not disclosed what sparked the verbal dispute, the exact nature of the sharp object used, or whether surveillance footage or witnesses have given Transit District 12 investigators any leads. NYPD Crime Stoppers' appeal for tips is a request for information, not an accusation against any named individual, and anyone with knowledge of the attack is urged to come forward.
