Bullet Shatters Milwaukee Torta Shop Window, Glass Cuts Customer's Ear

A bullet tore through the front window of JC King's Tortas on Milwaukee's South Side on Sunday evening, sending shards of glass into a 41-year-old customer near his ear. The man was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and police have not said whether he suffered a direct gunshot wound or was cut only by the shattered glass.

The shooting happened around 5:05 p.m. at the restaurant, located at 3128 South 13th Street near West Oklahoma Avenue, according to WISN 12 News. JC King's Tortas serves Mexican tortas and tacos from the storefront and also operates a location in West Allis along with a food truck, per EatStreet. Milwaukee police confirmed a window at the restaurant was damaged by gunfire but have not announced an arrest, and no other injuries were reported.

Additional details emerged Monday when CBS 58 reported that news crews observed employees cleaning up broken glass while officers searched the area for shell casings. That report specified that the flying glass, not necessarily a direct gunshot, cut the customer near his ear — a distinction police had not yet clarified as of the initial report.

A South Side Corridor Under Watch

The restaurant sits within Milwaukee Police District 2, a 7.2-square-mile patrol area on the near South Side that serves more than 79,000 residents out of a station at 245 West Lincoln Avenue, one of seven districts covering the city. Milwaukee police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, and the department directs tipsters to Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS or the anonymous P3 Tips mobile app.

This is not the only gunfire to strike the South Side in recent weeks. Hoodline reported Sunday on a toddler wounded by road rage gunfire that also referenced an August 17 fatal shooting tied to a road rage dispute on the South Side, while earlier in August a Milwaukee man was charged in three killings connected to a double homicide on West Pierce Street.

Crime Trends Cut Two Ways

The incident lands amid a mixed statistical picture for Milwaukee violence in 2026. Homicides citywide fell 30% in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2025, dropping from 71 to 51 incidents, according to Milwaukee Police Department data reported by CBS 58. Mayor Cavalier Johnson had announced in April that non-fatal shootings were down 27% year-to-date compared to 2025, a figure the city highlighted as evidence of improving public safety.

Yet clearing non-fatal shooting cases like the one at JC King's Tortas remains difficult for investigators. Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said during a mid-year briefing that while MPD cleared 98% of homicides in the first half of 2026, the clearance rate for non-fatal shootings stood at just 41%, with many such cases stemming from petty interpersonal disputes. The disparity underscores the uncertainty facing detectives now working to identify whoever fired into the crowded restaurant.

The broader backdrop remains stark: a Badger Institute analysis published in May found Milwaukee recorded 141 homicides in 2025, nine more than the year before, giving the city a homicide rate of 24.3 per 100,000 residents — more than 14 times higher than the rest of Wisconsin outside city limits.

Potential Charges If Suspects Are Identified

Wisconsin law provides prosecutors with tools to pursue felony charges once a suspect is identified in cases involving gunfire striking occupied buildings. Under Wisconsin Statute § 941.30(1), discharging a firearm in a manner showing utter disregard for human life is classified as first-degree recklessly endangering safety, a Class F felony punishable by up to 12.5 years in prison and a $25,000 fine. Separately, Wisconsin Statute § 941.20(1)(d) makes it a Class A misdemeanor to discharge a firearm within 100 yards of an occupied building without permission, a charge that can be filed alongside felony counts.

No arrests have been announced, and it remains unclear whether the shooting was targeted or the customer's injury was a random consequence of gunfire fired toward the block. Detectives have not said whether surveillance video from nearby businesses along South 13th Street captured a suspect or vehicle.
