A Denver teen who fell asleep on a bus after leaving work in Aurora woke up unsure where he was, with a dead phone and no easy way to call home. After walking for nearly an hour and asking strangers for help, he was eventually reunited with his mother through a chain of assistance that included an unhoused neighbor and two Denver police officers.
In a Facebook post shared Monday, the Denver Police Department said the teen’s mother had filed a missing-person report after he failed to return home on July 9. The teen called his mother from a neighbor’s phone after officers were dispatched to Denver’s 600 block of North Federal Boulevard.
Dead Phone, Long Walk Led Teen To North Bryant Street
The teen had taken the bus from his job in Aurora and fell asleep during the trip. When he woke, he was unsure of his location; with his phone dead, he walked for nearly an hour asking people for help before officers located him outside a business on North Bryant Street.
A neighbor experiencing homelessness stayed with the teen until police arrived and offered a phone so he could reach his mother. Officers Esparza and Rael, both assigned to District 1, then updated the family and coordinated the reunion.
Family Thanked Officers And The Neighbor
The young man’s mother and aunt expressed gratitude to the officers and the neighbor, who provided the crucial first connection to family. He returned home safely, turning what began as a missing-person report into a reminder that a working phone is not the only thing that can get someone home.
The department shared the account nearly four weeks after the July 9 incident under the heading “Compassion in Action,” highlighting the community role alongside the police response. In this case, the safe outcome depended on both: a neighbor who stopped to help and officers who completed the reunion.
