Cathedral City Theater Stacks Pulitzer-Level Plays Into One 200-Seat House

A $3 million renovation turned a former Desert Cinema IMAX movie theater into Coachella Valley Repertory’s 200-seat live performance playhouse in 2019, when CVRep moved to 68510 E. Palm Canyon Drive in Cathedral City. Before that, the company operated from an 86-seat leased space in Rancho Mirage, according to the Coachella Valley Independent. The theater now functions as a cultural anchor within Cathedral City’s Downtown Arts and Entertainment District.

CVRep is also the only theater in California’s Coachella Valley holding Small Professional Theatre status under contract with the Actors’ Equity Association, according to Discover Cathedral City. The theater’s season includes productions such as Les Misérables and The Minutes. Single-night tickets start at $55, per MyNewsLA’s reporting.

A Large-Scale Musical in an Intimate House

The production that most directly tests that 200-seat format will be Les Misérables, running February 24 through March 21, 2027. CVRep will employ Actors’ Equity union performers under an SPT Tier 8 contract, whose weekly minimum rate is $807, according to BroadwayWorld. The union scale underscores the financial commitment required to mount a sprawling musical inside an intimate regional house. Music History, Compressed Into Five Roles

Another musical uses a much smaller cast to evoke a famous recording-session gathering. Million Dollar Quartet runs January 13 through January 31, 2027, recreating the 1956 impromptu jam session at Sun Studio in Memphis, where producer Sam Phillips brought together Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley, per the MyNewsLA report. The Tony Award-winning musical’s original 2010 Broadway production ran for more than 400 performances at the Nederlander Theatre, earning three Tony nominations and winning Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Levi Kreis, according to the Internet Broadway Database.

An Adaptation Built for a Small Ensemble

Around the World in 80 Days, scheduled for December 2 through December 20, is written by playwright Mark Brown. Its stage adaptation asks just five actors to play 39 roles and has no hot-air-balloon sequence, referring to the David Niven film, according to Dramatic Publishing.

The Season’s Pulitzer-Finalist Drama

The Minutes, written by Tracy Letts, opens October 28 as a political satire that was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and other awards, the MyNewsLA report notes. Letts’ play was named a Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist in 2018 and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Play after its 2022 Broadway run, according to background compiled from Britannica. Letts previously won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for August: Osage County.

Together, the four productions run from late October 2026 through March 21, 2027, placing The Minutes, Around the World in 80 Days, Million Dollar Quartet and Les Misérables in one 200-seat house. As reported by MyNewsLA.com, Executive Artistic Director Adam Karsten said the coming season will bring “Our 2026-27 season will take us to a new level of captivating storytelling, brilliantly conceived productions and amazing music.” Karsten also said he is honored by the audience’s trust and willingness to take chances with less familiar shows, per the same report.

The Mainstage Is Only Part of the Plan

Beyond the four-show slate, CVRep plans a spring 2027 production through its New Works Program, although the specific title has not been announced. Called “Origins,” the program was established in 2023 and each season selects four original, unproduced full-length plays or musicals for 29-hour developmental staged readings. At the end of the season, one reading will be considered for a world premiere at CVRep the following year, according to NYC Playwrights. Which script from the current Origins cohort will claim that spring mainstage slot remains an open question.

CVRep’s footprint extends beyond its mainstage lineup. The company stages middle- and high-school productions, including Stacie Lents’ Henry’s Law. Between union-scale musicals, Pulitzer-pedigreed dramas and youth programming, the playhouse is positioned as one of the desert region’s busiest cultural anchors heading into 2027.

Karsten took over as executive director in 2022 after founding artistic director Ron Celona retired following 14 years leading the organization, according to Coachella Valley Repertory. Before joining CVRep, Karsten directed and produced for PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center, per BroadwayWorld.
