One person is dead and another appears to be seriously injured after a crash on Ronald Reagan Parkway near Portofino Way in the ChampionsGate area west of Interstate 4, forcing Polk County Sheriff's Office traffic homicide detectives to completely shut down the busy corridor in both directions on Friday afternoon.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office said an investigation is underway after the fatal crash, which happened in the area of Davenport, according to Tampa Bay 28. As of 2:45 p.m., the road remained completely closed in both directions while detectives worked the scene, the outlet reported. The crash site sits near the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate and the ChampionsGate Sports Complex, and Portofino Way itself feeds into nearby residential and vacation rental communities just off the parkway, according to Daily Ridge.
Complete closures like this one typically force drivers onto US 17/92 or Interstate 4 as alternate routes, and Daily Ridge's report notes that the shutdown forced motorists to seek other paths around the resort-heavy corridor. Given the parkway's proximity to major hotels and vacation communities, the extended closure disrupted both local commuters and visitors heading toward the interstate.
A Corridor With a Troubled Recent History
Friday's crash is far from an isolated incident on Ronald Reagan Parkway. On January 23, a 71-year-old Canadian driver was killed and a 22-year-old driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection with Loma Del Sol Drive in Davenport after a vehicle turned left across oncoming lanes, according to Daily Ridge's earlier reporting. Two days later, a 41-year-old motorcyclist died on westbound Ronald Reagan Parkway near Thousand Oaks Boulevard in Loughman when an oncoming passenger car attempted a U-turn into his path, per WKMG ClickOrlando, a crash that closed the parkway for roughly three hours while PCSO traffic homicide detectives investigated.
The posted speed limit along the parkway is 45 miles per hour, though WKMG ClickOrlando has reported that local residents have repeatedly raised concerns about high vehicle speeds on the corridor — concerns that intensified after an 11-year-old student was struck by a vehicle near Mater Academy earlier this year, a case Hoodline covered in April. Speeding is not a new problem here: back in August 2023, FOX 13 Tampa Bay reported that an 18-year-old driver traveling nearly 80 mph in a 45 mph zone near Champions Gate Boulevard fled law enforcement and caused a hit-and-run crash at Pine Tree Trail that critically injured two women.
Reckless Driving Enforcement Along the Parkway
Aggressive driving on the corridor has also drawn law enforcement attention beyond crash response. In February, two Davenport men were arrested after a PCSO sergeant observed them illegally street racing a motorcycle and a Chevrolet Camaro westward on Ronald Reagan Parkway near Lake Wilson Road, Hoodline previously reported. Florida Highway Patrol also conducts stationary radar speed enforcement along the parkway, according to FOX 13's reporting.
Ronald Reagan Parkway, also known as County Road 54, connects directly to Champions Gate Boulevard and County Road 532 near Interstate 4's Exit 58, forming a major arterial network for Davenport and the Four Corners area, according to AARoads. State and county agencies completed a $13.3 million diverging diamond interchange at that exit to help ease severe bottlenecks along the corridor, the roadway guide notes.
Polk County's Broader Crash Numbers
Friday's fatality adds to a county already grappling with a heavy traffic-safety burden. Preliminary Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles data showed Polk County recorded 12,698 traffic crashes in 2025, resulting in 99 fatalities and 10,186 injuries, according to WTSP. A separate analysis of state data by the Schiller Kessler Group found Polk County recorded 1,544 crashes per 100,000 residents in 2024, ranking it eighth among Florida's 67 counties for crash rates per capita — a trend attributed in part to heavy commuter traffic between Tampa and Orlando combined with rapid local growth.
