Fern Creek’s long-closed library is finally starting to look like a library again. Construction is moving on the 18,000-square-foot branch beside Fern Creek High School, promising to restore a neighborhood service that disappeared when the previous branch closed in 2019.
Mayor Craig Greenberg highlighted the project in a Tuesday update, saying the new branch will give families a place for children to discover reading, students to learn and neighbors to connect, while serving more than 130,000 people a year, according to Mayor Greenberg’s update

A Bigger, Freestanding Library For Fern Creek
The new branch is planned as a state-of-the-art facility with abundant natural light, quiet reading and study areas, meeting rooms, and dedicated spaces for children and teens, according to a Louisville Free Public Library release. The same plan places the building on Fern Creek Road next to Fern Creek High School and near Fern Creek Elementary and surrounding neighborhoods.
The project was officially launched with a groundbreaking on December 15, 2022, after Metro government committed $8.7 million in capital and American Rescue Plan funding. Additional support was expected through private fundraising for the library, which is intended to become Fern Creek’s first freestanding library building.
The Library Foundation estimates the finished branch could draw 130,000 visits annually, circulate roughly 250,000 items, host 15,000 program attendees and provide 30,000 computer sessions. That would make the building more than a place to grab a book; it would be a sizable new community hub in southeastern Jefferson County.
Public Opening Timelines Have Shifted
Earlier projections pointed to a 2026 completion. Louisville Public Media reported in December 2024 that the Fern Creek and Main library projects were expected to finish that year, while a December 2025 District 22 newsletter said Fern Creek was then projected to open in early 2027.
The library system’s current LFPL project page now labels the branch “Coming 2027.” The exact opening date has not been announced, but the latest construction images show walls, windows, flooring and interior spaces taking shape inside the future library.
The timing also lines up with Louisville’s proposed FY27 budget, which includes expanded library services and operating support for the Main Library and Fern Creek expansions, according to Metro’s FY27 budget. For Fern Creek families, the construction site is now a visible sign that the neighborhood’s long library drought is nearing its final chapter.
