Cleveland woke Sunday to cloudy, humid skies around 72 degrees, with a much wetter and rougher day ahead. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to push temperatures near 80, while heavy rain, flooding and dangerous Lake Erie currents create the main concerns for residents and beachgoers.
Flood Watch Covers Cuyahoga County
The National Weather Service in Cleveland says a Flood Watch is in effect for Cuyahoga County from 10 a.m. Sunday through the evening. Early rain could bring around an inch, with another inch possible later in the day and locally higher totals where storms repeatedly cross the same areas, according to the National Weather Service.
Storm chances increase from late morning into the afternoon, with the highest hourly rain chances arriving during the midafternoon. Isolated strong to severe storms are possible across Northeast Ohio, bringing damaging wind gusts and a small but real tornado threat.
Lake Erie Swimming Conditions Turn Dangerous
A Beach Hazards Statement warns of a high risk of rip currents along the Cuyahoga County lakeshore from 2 p.m. Sunday through Monday morning. Swimmers should stay out of the water, as currents can pull people away from shore and along piers or other structures.
Sunday night stays unsettled, with showers and thunderstorms likely before 8 p.m. and additional storm chances through midnight. Skies remain cloudy, temperatures fall to about 68 degrees, and northeast winds increase to around 12 mph.
Brief Break Monday And Tuesday
Monday brings a welcome reset, with mostly sunny skies, a high near 78 and north winds around 12 mph. Monday night should be mostly clear with a low near 64, followed by a sunny Tuesday afternoon topping out around 82.
That dry stretch will not last all week. Shower and thunderstorm chances return Wednesday, when Cleveland could reach 84 degrees, then continue at scattered levels through Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
