The Big Ten Wrestling Championships are coming to downtown Columbus in March 2027, marking the first time the conference has staged its marquee mat tournament away from a campus arena. Nationwide Arena will host the 113th edition of the championships on March 6 and 7, 2027, pulling the event off campuses like Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center and Ohio State's St. John's Arena and into a bigger downtown venue built for crowds.
The Big Ten Conference made the announcement Wednesday, and as reported by NBC4 WCMH-TV, the tournament is being marketed as the first Big Ten Wrestling Championships held at a neutral site. Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti said the move to a venue like Nationwide Arena lets the conference accommodate larger crowds and expand spectator seating beyond what traditional campus arenas can offer, according to the Big Ten Conference.
Columbus already has history with this event. Ohio State's campus hosted the Big Ten wrestling finals in 2015, when the Buckeyes shared the team title with Iowa, per the same NBC4 account. Nationwide Arena itself dwarfs that old campus setting, with seating capacity of up to 19,500 for basketball and more than 20,000 for major arena events, according to SeatGeek.
Fourteen Schools, Ten Weight Classes, One Big Stage
The 2027 tournament schedule spans four sessions across the two days, opening Saturday with first-round through semifinal bouts and wrapping up Sunday with consolation finals and individual championship matches across all 10 weight classes, per the Big Ten Conference. The meet also serves as the primary qualifier and seed-allocator for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, giving every bout tournament stakes beyond a conference trophy.
Even though the Big Ten expanded to 18 member universities in 2024 with the additions of Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington, only 14 schools will actually compete in the 2027 wrestling tournament, since none of those four West Coast newcomers sponsor NCAA Division I men's wrestling, according to On3. That 14-team wrestling roster has held steady since Maryland and Rutgers joined the conference back in 2014, the same report notes.
Ohio State enters the neutral-site era with a program that has plenty of local pull. The Buckeyes have won five Big Ten wrestling titles overall, and head coach Tom Ryan, who has led the program since 2006, guided Ohio State to the 2015 NCAA National Championship along with Big Ten team titles in 2015, 2017 and 2018, according to Ohio State Athletics. That 2018 conference crown, won in East Lansing, marked the last time the Buckeyes claimed the Big Ten wrestling title.
A Bigger Year for Nationwide Arena Ahead
The wrestling championships are just one piece of a loaded 2027 calendar for the downtown venue. Nationwide Arena is also set to host the NCAA Women's Final Four in April 2027, with the national semifinals on April 2 and the title game on April 4, both at Nationwide Arena in Columbus. Columbus last hosted the Women's Final Four in 2018, and Hoodline previously reported on tournament plans tied to that 2027 event.
Later in the year, Nationwide Arena will host the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December 2027, a tournament the venue also staged in 2021 when it hosted the volleyball semifinals and championship game, according to the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. Between wrestling, basketball and volleyball, downtown Columbus is stacking up a rare run of major NCAA championship hosting duties within a single calendar year.
Columbus Building Its Reputation as a Championship City
Ohio has already established itself as a preferred host state for elite wrestling in recent years. Cleveland's Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse hosted the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in March 2026, an event Hoodline covered when an Osceola wrestler chased All-America glory on that same mat.
Nationwide Arena also regularly co-hosts events during the Arnold Sports Festival, the massive multi-sport exposition held every March across downtown Columbus venues, according to Wikipedia. That existing early-spring sports infrastructure gives the city a head start on absorbing another major event just weeks apart on the calendar.
The arena's logistics benefit from an operational partnership that spans both downtown and campus venues. Nationwide Arena and Ohio State's Value City Arena at the Schottenstein Center are jointly operated and booked by Columbus Arena Management, a partnership involving the Blue Jackets, Ohio State and Nationwide Insurance, per Columbus Arenas Sports & Entertainment. That shared management structure could smooth the transition as wrestling moves off campus without leaving the university's broader venue network entirely.
The visitor traffic that comes with hosting is no small factor for the region. Greater Columbus tourism reached an all-time high of 54.9 million visitor trips in 2025, generating $8.6 billion in direct visitor spending and supporting more than 83,000 local jobs, according to Experience Columbus. With three major NCAA championships now on the books for 2027, city tourism officials appear positioned to keep building on those numbers heading into next year.
