Adams Morgan is getting a new shawarma contender, with a Damascus-inspired restaurant moving into the former Mola Empanada space. King of Shawarma has posted a new sign, but hungry locals will have to wait a little longer for an opening date.
PoPville reported Tuesday that the 18th Street storefront now carries the King of Shawarma branding, with the drinks fridge already stocked. The announcement describes the incoming business as a Syrian street food experience built around generations-old recipes from Damascus.
The Former Mola Space Is Promising Syrian Street Food
According to the storefront description, King of Shawarma plans to serve freshly marinated shawarma seasoned with traditional spices, along with homemade sauces and fresh Levantine ingredients. The location is 2438 18th Street NW, a storefront also listed in records from the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration.
No menu, hours or opening date have been announced yet, so this remains a sign-and-snacks situation rather than a confirmed first bite. Still, the new concept gives Adams Morgan another Middle Eastern food option and adds a distinctly Syrian pitch to one of the neighborhood's busiest restaurant corridors.
