Two people are in custody after a stolen vehicle tied to an armed carjacking in Washington, D.C., crashed during a brief police pursuit near Gaithersburg early Monday. A gun was recovered, one suspect was taken to a hospital after being tased, and officials said no officers or bystanders were injured.
According to WJLA, Montgomery County and Gaithersburg police responded around 6 a.m. to the area of Quince Orchard Road and Route 28 after D.C. police reported that the vehicle had been taken in an armed carjacking. Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but it fled briefly before crashing.
Two Suspects Taken Into Custody After Crash
Both suspects were taken into custody following the crash, police said. One was transported to a hospital after officers used a Taser, while investigators recovered a gun at the scene. The available report did not identify the suspects or announce charges.
Gaithersburg Has Logged Several Recent Vehicle Thefts
The incident comes amid a string of vehicle-theft reports listed in Gaithersburg’s official crime summary, including reports on July 3, July 5, July 13 and July 21. Those entries do not establish any connection to Monday’s crash, but they show vehicle theft has remained a recurring issue in the city, according to the City of Gaithersburg.
Montgomery County police, Gaithersburg police and the Metropolitan Police Department were still being contacted for additional information Monday morning. Investigators have not released further details about the carjacking, the crash or what charges the two people may face.
