Washington sports fans are being asked to open the closets, scrapbooks and junk drawers where local sports history has been hiding for decades. A new D.C. Public Library project wants the keepsakes behind those memories—not just championship banners and star players, but the ordinary fan artifacts that made the moments matter.
Called “Hail to the Fans: The Spirit of DC Sports,” the initiative is collecting fan stories, photographs, ticket stubs, jerseys, programs and other memorabilia connected to Washington sports. WJLA reported that the project is designed to preserve the personal experiences and traditions that traditional sports archives often leave out.
Every Ticket Stub Comes With A Story
The library is welcoming submissions from across the DMV, covering any professional Washington team and any era. Its submission guide lists everything from hats and folded newspaper pages to photographs, videos and jerseys, but asks contributors to include the story connected to each item.
Public credit is optional, so contributors can preserve a family memory without necessarily putting their name on display. According to the DC Public Library announcement, people will loan items for the exhibition while retaining ownership, and their objects and stories will be returned when the exhibition closes in October 2027.
A Big Washington Sports Year Is Coming
The exhibition is scheduled to open in April 2027 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library and all 25 neighborhood library locations. The timing lines up with a major sports calendar for the District, including Washington hosting the NFL Draft, the reopening of a renovated Capital One Arena and the start of construction on a new Commanders stadium.
That gives the project a fitting assignment before the next wave of big moments arrives: preserve the old ones, too. Fans can submit a ticket stub, lucky hat, game-day photograph or another piece of Washington sports history through the library’s Hail to the Fans page.
