Death Cab for Cutie is coming back to Las Vegas this week with a new album, a deep catalog and nearly three decades of emotional indie rock to draw from. The band’s Thursday night return to The Theater at Virgin Hotels is less a nostalgia lap than a fresh test of how much life remains in a long-running act.
The eight-time Grammy-nominated band will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, August 6, with Lala Lala opening the show. Las Vegas Weekly reports that Death Cab last played the Virgin theater in 2023, with ticket prices listed between $53 and $219.
A New Album Built From Grief And Recovery
The Las Vegas stop arrives behind “I Built You A Tower,” the band’s 11th studio album, released June 5 on independent label ANTI-Records. The band’s official store describes the record as a work about loss, grief and the growth that can follow a personal collapse, while frontman Ben Gibbard said the album’s central image is something painful that has to be faced rather than ignored.
Death Cab reportedly made the album at unusual speed, recording it in just three weeks. That urgency gives the new material a different context from the band’s older, carefully etched records, even as songs such as the new lead single “Riptides” sit comfortably beside the familiar ache that helped define the group.
Expect Hits, Rarities And A Spreadsheet’s Worth Of Planning
Gibbard has kept a spreadsheet of every Death Cab setlist for more than two decades, according to Las Vegas Weekly. He also reviews the band’s previous two or three performances in each city before shaping a new set, a level of preparation that makes the spreadsheet sound like the least rock-and-roll object in the backstage area.
The result is a show designed to balance major songs with less obvious choices, rather than simply march through the greatest hits. Las Vegas fans can expect the emotional pull of longtime staples, including Nick Harmer’s rumbling bassline on “I Will Possess Your Heart,” alongside songs from the new record.

Harmer, the bassist and the only active founding member besides Gibbard, attributed the group’s longevity to communication. He also said the move to ANTI gave the band a needed boost at a point when many acts approaching their 30th year might be expected to coast.
Instead, Death Cab is launching a tour expected to run for more than a year, with the Las Vegas performance serving as an early showcase for its newest chapter.
