Detroit officials ordered residents around the 19700 block of Asbury Park to shelter in place last night after a woman allegedly pointed a firearm at children who were not hers and then went inside a nearby home. Several law enforcement vehicles, including at least one armored unit, converged on the Greenfield neighborhood block as emergency personnel worked the scene into the evening.
According to a police spokesperson cited by CBS News Detroit, the woman entered a home in the area after allegedly pointing the gun at the children. A CBS News Detroit photojournalist saw the heavy police presence on scene, and officials had not disclosed further details about what led up to the confrontation or the woman's relationship, if any, to the children involved.
The station reports the block sits less than a mile from Alice Gorham Park and Pembroke Academy, a landmark detail officials cited when describing the area's boundaries during the shelter-in-place order. Pembroke Academy is a tuition-free public charter school serving grades from Young 5s through 8th grade, according to the school itself, while the park is a City of Detroit-operated green space nearby, per the City of Detroit.
A Familiar Street for Standoffs
The 19700 block of Asbury Park falls within the patrol territory of the Detroit Police Department's 8th Precinct, which operates out of a station on West McNichols Road, according to the City of Detroit. This is not the first time the street has drawn a heavy police response. In June, 8th Precinct officers responded to another armed standoff on Asbury Park near Vassar Drive, where a woman reportedly barricaded herself inside a residence with a child after a shooting before ultimately surrendering, according to the Detroit Police Department's 8th Precinct.
Detroit police also issued a shelter-in-place order for residents along Asbury Park and Constance Avenue back in September 2022, when special response teams surrounded a barricaded homicide suspect on the city's west side, according to ClickOnDetroit. That standoff was resolved and the order lifted after tactical teams secured the location without public injury, the outlet reported at the time.
How Detroit Police Handle Barricade Situations
The department's Special Response Team, its SWAT unit established in 1988, follows protocols for barricaded suspects that prioritize crisis intervention officers, perimeter containment, and verbal negotiations over immediate tactical entry, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Those procedures place particular emphasis on child safety, with Crisis Intervention Team-trained officers used when children may be threatened inside a residence, and negotiation favored over rapid entry whenever it is feasible, FOX 2 Detroit has reported separately.
Under Michigan law, pointing a firearm at another person without intent to cause great bodily harm can constitute felonious assault, a felony carrying up to four years in prison and a fine of up to $2,000, according to Joseph A. Simon, PLLC. That penalty can climb to a $6,000 fine and up to 150 hours of community service if the conduct occurs within a weapon-free school zone, a detail with local relevance given the proximity of Pembroke Academy to Saturday's incident. Separately, willfully brandishing or displaying a firearm in public in a threatening manner is a misdemeanor under state law punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $100 fine, per the Neumann Law Group.
Wayne County prosecutors have in recent months emphasized strict enforcement of child-endangerment and safe-storage laws, filing felony charges against adults whose accessible firearms put children at risk, as ClickOnDetroit reported in March. No charges had been announced in Saturday's incident as of this writing, and officials had not said whether the woman is the resident of the home she entered or whether mental health co-responders took part in any negotiations.
