Downtown Los Angeles is waking up to temperatures near 75 degrees, but the real heat is still ahead. Friday is expected to reach about 97 degrees under mostly sunny skies, with officials warning that the combination of daytime heat and limited overnight relief could bring dangerous conditions.
An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Friday, with a high risk of heat-related illness for sensitive groups and people spending time outdoors. The National Weather Service advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
Heat Peaks Friday Afternoon
Temperatures will climb quickly through the morning, reaching the mid-90s by early afternoon and topping out near 97 degrees later in the day. Southwesterly winds around 5 to 10 mph will shift more westerly during the afternoon, but they will offer little relief from the heat.
An air quality alert also remains in effect through 8 p.m. Friday because of ozone pollution. The highest pollution levels are expected during the afternoon and early evening, so people with lung disease, older adults, children, pregnant people and those working outdoors should check air quality readings and limit prolonged or intense activity outside.
Noticeable Cooling Arrives This Weekend
Saturday will remain hot but slightly cooler, with sunny skies and a high near 94 degrees. The bigger break arrives Sunday, when temperatures are expected to fall to about 87, followed by an even milder 84 degrees Monday.
Overnight temperatures will also become more manageable, dropping to around 71 degrees Friday night, 68 Saturday night and 66 Sunday night. A slight chance of rain showers appears Tuesday after 11 a.m., with a 15% chance of precipitation and a high near 83 degrees.
Keep Cool Through Friday Night
The warm overnight low Friday means homes without air conditioning may not cool down quickly, extending the strain from the afternoon heat. Residents should avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles, take breaks from outdoor work and check on neighbors who may be especially vulnerable.
Anyone needing relief can review cooling centers, libraries and other heat resources through the City of Los Angeles. Conditions should ease substantially this weekend, but Friday remains the day to take the warning seriously.
