
A motorcyclist was killed early Tuesday morning when a car collided with the rider on southbound State Route 525 in Mukilteo and then sped away without stopping, according to Washington State Patrol. The crash happened around 6:35 a.m. just south of Beverly Park Road at milepost 4, fully blocking southbound lanes during the morning commute.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding said the driver fled the scene immediately, prompting WSP detectives to open a felony hit-and-run investigation, as reported by KIRO Newsradio. WSDOT Traffic, which monitors King and Snohomish county roadways, relayed word from Washington State Patrol District 7's public information office that the crash left the intersection fully blocked, with a northbound lane and turn lane also closed as troopers investigated. WSDOT Incident Response crews and troopers worked to manage traffic and secure the scene while the investigation got underway.
The victim's identity and a description of the suspect vehicle have not been released. It also remains unclear whether surveillance cameras near Beverly Park Road captured the car fleeing, or exactly when southbound lanes fully reopened to traffic.
A Felony Charge Awaits Identification
Once identified, the driver could face serious criminal exposure. Under Revised Code of Washington 46.52.020, failing to stop at the scene of a fatal crash is a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a $20,000 fine, and a mandatory one-year license revocation, according to legal guidance published by hitandrunwashington.com. Washington law requires drivers involved in fatal collisions to remain at or immediately return to the scene.
But proving the case isn't automatic. The same dossier of investigative practice shows that establishing a driver's knowledge that a collision occurred is a required legal element before hit-and-run charges can stick. In July, WSP District 7 investigators reclassified a fatal motorcycle crash on nearby SR 99 from a hit-and-run to an accident after video evidence and driver interviews showed the departing motorist had no knowledge that an impact had occurred, according to Washington State Patrol.
Summer Remains the Deadliest Season for Riders
Tuesday's crash falls squarely within the deadliest stretch of the year for Washington motorcyclists. State traffic safety tracking shows that 59% of all motorcyclist fatalities in Washington historically occur during the four-month window from May through August, according to KIRO 7 News. Between 2021 and 2025, motorcycles made up just 3% of Washington's total traffic collisions, yet riders accounted for 16% of all traffic deaths statewide over that same span, a disparity state agencies attribute to motorcyclists' lack of protective structure on the road.
The trend has been easing somewhat at the statewide level. Motorcyclist fatalities in Washington fell from a historic peak of 142 in 2023 to 113 in 2024, with a preliminary count of 103 in 2025, per the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. Overall traffic fatalities across the state dropped 10.5% in 2025 to 659 deaths, marking a second straight year of decline after a 33-year peak of 809 fatalities in 2023, though officials note speeding and impaired driving remain top contributing factors.
A Corridor With a History
SR 525 is a roughly 30-mile state highway spanning Snohomish and Island counties, serving as the main connector between Interstate 5 in Lynnwood, industrial Mukilteo, and Whidbey Island via the WSDOT ferry route, per background compiled on Wikipedia. The stretch near Beverly Park Road has seen fatal tragedy before: in June 2021, a pedestrian walking along the state route was struck and killed by a driver at the same corridor, as previously reported by KIRO 7 News.
