A man is dead after being shot at a home on the 2500 block of Lane Street in Durham Sunday afternoon, marking the fourth fatal or critical shooting to strike the city in just ten days. Durham police officers were called to the scene around 3:36 p.m. after receiving reports of a dead person at the home, and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.
According to WRAL, the man died following the shooting, and Durham police are now investigating the case. Investigator R. Armstrong is leading the inquiry and is asking anyone with relevant information to come forward; Armstrong can be reached directly at 919-560-4440 ext. 29325. Police said they will release more information about the victim and the circumstances of the shooting at the appropriate time.
A Block With a Deadly History
The 2500 block of Lane Street is not new to fatal gun violence. Back in May 2021, 25-year-old Jerel Alexander Brown was fatally shot at the same location, according to the Durham Police Department's historical case records. Sunday's shooting marks the second known homicide on that specific block in five years.
The killing also lands in the middle of an unusually violent stretch for Durham. Just nine days earlier, on August 6, a man was fatally shot on the 300 block of Melbourne Street in a case Hoodline reported remains unsolved, with CrimeStoppers appealing for tips in that investigation as well. Then, two days before the Lane Street shooting, a woman was killed and a man critically wounded in a shooting on East Main Street just blocks from Durham police headquarters. A day after that, a Middle Street shooting left a victim wounded and a suspect jailed on a block with its own bloody past, according to Hoodline's prior coverage.
Homicides Climbing Even as Other Crime Falls
The surge comes despite broader signs that Durham's crime picture had been improving. The city saw a 16.9% overall decrease in violent crime in 2025, driven by drops in aggravated assaults and robberies, according to 100.3 WHEB. Even so, annual homicides held steady at 39 cases in 2025, and the outlet reported the Durham Police Department cleared 89.7% of its homicide cases that year, a rate far above national averages, despite the department operating with only 74.8% of its sworn officer positions filled.
That progress has not carried into this year's homicide count specifically. Durham recorded 13 homicides in the first five months of 2026, a 44% jump from the nine homicides reported over the same stretch in 2025, per a report from WRAL. City government data also showed Part 1 violent crime rose 4.6% citywide during the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier, with 365 violent crimes recorded. County-level numbers tell a different story: the Durham County Sheriff's Office reported an 8.7% reduction in top major crimes across the county during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year.
How to Submit a Tip
Durham police are asking anyone with information about the Lane Street shooting to contact Investigator Armstrong, or to submit a tip anonymously through Durham CrimeStoppers at durhamcrimestoppers.org or by calling (919) 683-1200. Callers are not required to identify themselves. The anonymous system, run using Anderson Software and P3 Tips technology, allows tipsters to collect cash rewards of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest in felony cases, with payouts available at bank branches using a designated code and no identification required, according to the North Carolina Crime Stoppers Association.
Open questions remain in the case, including the identity of the victim and whether investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a targeted confrontation or a dispute among people who knew each other. Durham police have not released a suspect description as of Sunday evening.
