A man was shot in the upper body Wednesday night on the 1500 block of East Lafayette Avenue in East Baltimore's Oliver neighborhood and rushed to an area hospital, where he remained in critical condition.
According to WBAL-TV, Baltimore City Police were still investigating the shooting Wednesday night, with preliminary information indicating officers found the man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body before he was transported to the hospital. The station's report, credited to digital content producer Julian Nazario, did not identify the victim or say whether anyone had been arrested.
Detectives Seek Tips After Wednesday Night Shooting
Officers responded to the scene shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to WCBM, which reported that Eastern District Shooting detectives were assigned to lead the investigation. The gunfire came just one day after the Baltimore Police Department kicked off its National Night Out 2026 events at the Oliver Senior Center on Tuesday, part of an ongoing push to build relationships with residents in the neighborhood.
Citywide Shootings Down Slightly as Homicides Hit Historic July Low
The wounding comes as Baltimore continues to post broader public-safety gains. The city recorded 187 non-fatal shootings through August 3, 2026, a slight dip from 190 during the same period in 2025, according to the City of Baltimore. Officials also reported seven homicides in July, the lowest July total in the city's history, and said police had seized 1,189 firearms — including 123 untraceable ghost guns — while making 743 gun arrests through August 1.
Those citywide gains extend to solving shootings, too. Per the Baltimore Police Department's 2026 Mid-Year Crime Report, non-fatal shooting cases were being cleared at a 54% rate through July 1 — a 12-percentage-point improvement over the same point in 2025.
A Pattern of Gun Violence Along East Lafayette Avenue
The Eastern District, which includes Oliver and neighboring East Baltimore communities, has seen other recent bloodshed. Patrol officers responded to a fatal shooting on August 1 in the 900 block of East 20th Street, where they found a 50-year-old man dead from gunshot wounds, as reported by Baltimore Witness. East Lafayette Avenue itself has seen violence before: in June 2025, Baltimore Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert on the 1900 block — about four blocks east of Wednesday's shooting — and found a man fatally shot, according to WBAL Radio.
That June 2025 killing on East Lafayette Avenue later led to a bench trial in which a judge cleared the shooting suspect this July, Hoodline previously reported.
