One man is dead and another is recovering after an early-morning shooting in east Charlotte last Wednesday, and police say a 29-year-old man now faces four felony charges in the case. The gunfire drew homicide detectives to the Eastway Division and ended with an arrest the following day.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police identified the victim as Gilberto Gomez-Ruiz, 27, in a case update issued last Thursday. Police said the shooting happened shortly before 2 a.m. in the 2300 block of Dunlavin Way, where officers responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call found two victims with gunshot wounds.

MEDIC pronounced Gomez-Ruiz dead at the scene, according to CMPD. The second victim was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Homicide Unit detectives and Crime Scene Search processed the scene and collected physical evidence, while CMPD's Operations Command, Victim Services and MEDIC assisted. The investigation is listed under report 20260729-0145-00 and remains active, police said.
David Michael Simpson Arrested And Charged
Investigators identified David Michael Simpson, 29, as a suspect. CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested him in Charlotte last Thursday, after which he was taken to the Law Enforcement Center for an interview with homicide detectives before being transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
Simpson was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon. The charges are allegations, not convictions, and the homicide investigation continues.

CMPD said Gomez-Ruiz's next of kin was notified of his death and the arrest. The department said additional details will be released as the case develops.
