A violent robbery at a Rainbow clothing store on San Antonio's East Side has left a 56-year-old sales associate injured and police searching for the suspect responsible. The confrontation happened around 3 p.m. on May 12 at the store located at 1842 S. W.W. White Road, when the employee tried to stop the suspect from leaving with stolen merchandise.
According to KENS 5, employees and witnesses described the suspect as a man wearing women's clothing and a wig who assaulted the associate near the store's main entrance as she attempted to recover the stolen items. The associate sustained physical injuries during the struggle, according to the same report. Police, as reported by WOAI, are now asking the public for help identifying the man accused of robbing the store and assaulting the employee.
Cash Reward Offered for Tips
Crime Stoppers of San Antonio is offering a cash reward of up to $5,000 for anonymous tips that lead to a felony arrest in the case. Tipsters can call (210) 224-7867 or submit information through the P3 Tips mobile app, but the organization requires that tips come directly through its own encrypted system rather than to police in order to remain eligible for the reward.
Under Texas Penal Code § 29.02, committing theft while intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causing bodily injury elevates the offense from simple theft to second-degree felony robbery, per Justia Law. That charge carries a potential sentence of two to 20 years in state prison and fines of up to $10,000, a considerably steeper legal exposure than a typical shoplifting case would bring.
Retail Robberies Persist Despite Falling Crime Rates
The East Side incident comes even as San Antonio's overall crime numbers have been trending downward. Citywide crime dropped by more than 12% in 2025, driven largely by an 18.1% decrease in property crimes, according to statistics presented to the City Council's Public Safety Committee and reported by KSAT. Robbery offenses specifically fell 17% in 2025 alongside a 21.1% decline in violent street crime, per San Antonio Police Department data cited by UT San Antonio criminologists.
Those gains are tied in part to the city's Violent Crime Reduction Plan, developed with UT San Antonio researchers, which uses 135,000 geographic grids across the city to direct hot-spot policing and targeted interventions toward high-crime areas, according to UT San Antonio. SAPD also reported that average emergency response times improved to 5 minutes and 29 seconds in 2025, down from 5 minutes and 56 seconds the year before, with department leadership crediting increased patrol staffing and call-triage adjustments.
Retail Theft's Costly Ripple Effect Statewide
The Rainbow store robbery also underscores a broader financial problem facing Texas retailers. A report from the Texas Organized Retail Theft Task Force found that organized retail theft costs Texas retailers more than $400 million annually in inventory losses and cuts state sales tax revenue by over $20 million a year, according to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. The task force was created by the Texas Legislature in 2023 to study commercial theft patterns and evaluate law enforcement responses.
Separately, data published in June by retail intelligence platform Auror found that the top 10% of retail theft offenders in Texas were responsible for more than 71% of recorded store thefts statewide, a figure that exceeds the national average of 66%. It is not known whether investigators believe the East Side suspect is connected to other retail thefts in the region, and the current medical condition of the injured employee has not been disclosed.
