The exact ages and identities of the children have not been released, and police have not disclosed which of the two victims, if either, fired the weapon involved.
Tampa police say the two people killed knew each other prior to the shooting, and that there is no ongoing threat to the general public, according to a department statement reported by WTSP. Preliminary data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association shows Tampa is among a minority of major U.S. cities seeing an uptick in homicides during the first half of 2026, even as homicide rates decline broadly nationwide, according to Axios reporting.
That uptick stands in contrast to the department's own 2025 numbers. In its annual report released in February, the Tampa Police Department documented a 52.8% drop in homicides and a 16.6% decrease in overall violent crime in 2025 compared to the year before, crediting expanded surveillance and its Real-Time Crime Center for the earlier decline, per the same WTSP report.
Tampa police operate three patrol districts covering 116 square miles with more than 1,000 sworn officers, using the centralized Real-Time Crime Center to support homicide detectives working scenes like Friday's, according to Guardian Protection. The North 15th Street corridor has seen violence before; the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office investigated a fatal shooting in the 12000 block of N. 15th Street in October 2020 that struck a delivery vehicle and involved multiple participants.
No arrests have been announced, and police have not released the names of either victim as the investigation continues.
