A 17-year-old Edgewood teen was killed Sunday after a Honda slammed into a Lexus stopped along the outer loop of I-695 in Baltimore County, where he was changing a tire. The crash happened near the Interstate 83 exit and also sent the Lexus driver to a hospital.
According to WBAL-TV, Maryland State Police said the teen was one of three passengers in the Lexus. Police believe the Lexus had its hazard lights activated when the Honda rear-ended it, and the Honda driver stayed at the scene; no other injuries were reported.
Another I-695 Tire Change Ended In Death Last Year
The deadly crash echoes another fatal roadside incident on the Beltway. In April 2025, Maryland State Police said 67-year-old Junior Dunkley was struck and killed while changing a flat tire on the shoulder of I-695 near Wilkens Avenue, with the suspected driver fleeing the scene, according to the Maryland State Police.
Maryland Law Requires Drivers To Move Over
Maryland’s Move Over law requires drivers approaching a stopped vehicle displaying warning signals to change lanes when possible or slow down, the Maryland Department of Transportation says. The state also advises motorists to avoid unnecessary stops on roadways and shoulders whenever possible.
For drivers dealing with a flat tire, AAA recommends pulling as far away from traffic as possible, turning on hazard lights and calling roadside assistance if the shoulder is not safe. A nearby exit ramp or parking area is generally safer than attempting a tire change beside fast-moving Beltway traffic, according to AAA.
