Evergreen State Fair Opens in Monroe, Bringing Weeks of US 2 Gridlock

The Evergreen State Fair kicked off Thursday in Monroe, and with it comes the annual test of patience for anyone driving US 2 near the fairgrounds. The Washington State Department of Transportation is warning drivers to expect heavy traffic in both directions near milepost 13 every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 7, when the 117th edition of the fair wraps up.

The advisory, posted by WSDOT Traffic, covers the entire run of the fair at Evergreen State Fair Park, located at 14405 179th Avenue SE. According to the agency, the daily congestion window spans the full workday, meaning commuters and fairgoers alike should plan around it. The fair itself runs August 27 through September 1, closes September 2, and reopens September 3 through September 7 for its second stretch of the season.

A Fairgrounds Built Around the Highway It Now Clogs

There's some irony baked into the timing of the backups: the fair's move to its current Monroe site actually coincided with the opening of the US 2 highway link between Monroe and Snohomish back in September 1949, according to the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. The fair's roots go back even further, tracing to an 1874 agricultural exhibition, long before the highway existed to bottleneck around it.

This year's theme, “Barn in the USA! Celebrating America's 250,” ties that long agricultural history to the country's upcoming semi-quincentennial, according to Snohomish County. The theme is chosen annually by community members and the Fair Advisory Board, blending local heritage with the national milestone.

Skipping the $15 Parking Lot Altogether

For drivers hoping to avoid both the highway slowdown and paying for parking, the county points to a direct alternative. Community Transit runs Routes 270 and 271 straight to the fairgrounds' Red Gate entrance, letting riders skip the $15 parking fee and the US 2 backups entirely, per the same Snohomish County release. Riders 18 and under travel free, and Community Transit is marking its own 50th anniversary with a dedicated event day at the fair on August 30.

Gate admission for 2026 runs $16 on weekdays and Labor Day, and $18 on weekends, for anyone between 13 and 64. The county also flagged a run of discount days: $7 Kids Day admission on Thursday, $7 Senior Day on August 31, and $5 Family Day on September 3. Children five and under and seniors 90 and older get in free every day of the fair.

Law Enforcement Staffing Key Intersections

To keep traffic moving near the fairgrounds, the Monroe Police Department stations officers at critical intersections along the corridor, including Highway 2 and 179th Avenue SE and Cascade View Drive, working alongside the Washington State Patrol and the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, according to a video posted by the Evergreen State Fair. Police are advising motorists to check WSDOT's travel tools and build extra time into their trips.

The scale of the operation helps explain why the traffic push is so intense. The 193-acre Evergreen State Fair Park is the largest public multi-use event facility in Snohomish County, generating more than $48 million in annual economic impact and drawing nearly 350,000 guests during the fair alone, according to City of Monroe municipal records. The property was originally the site of the former Snohomish County Poor Farm before becoming the fairgrounds.

Speedway, Concerts, and a Rodeo Round Out the Grounds

Beyond the midway, the fairgrounds are also home to Evergreen Speedway, which features a 7,000-seat covered grandstand and stands as the only NASCAR-sanctioned racing venue in Washington state, according to the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. The site additionally includes a 36,000-square-foot multi-purpose events center and 278 RV sites, hosting more than 700 meetings and off-season events throughout the year beyond the fair itself.

This year's grandstand entertainment lineup includes national acts Lee Brice, Sir Mix-A-Lot, and Amy Grant, alongside the Pro-West Rodeo and a demolition derby, as reported by Seattle Red. Concert tickets purchased in advance include general fair gate admission, according to the outlet.

Ahead of this year's opening, Snohomish County Parks directed grant-funded capital improvements toward the fairgrounds in February, covering swine pen upgrades, emergency access improvements, and roof repairs, per Snohomish County. The upgrades were completed ahead of the fair season as part of the county's ongoing management of the grounds as a regional park facility.
