Evil Dead icon Bruce Campbell is bringing his new independent film to Austin this fall, with Ernie & Emma screening at two Alamo Drafthouse locations and Campbell appearing in person. The filmmaker will introduce the movie, talk through its making and take audience questions after the show.
Campbell is scheduled at Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline on Friday, October 9, and at Slaughter Lane on Saturday, October 10, according to CultureMap Austin. The movie’s official tour page now lists tickets as available and says the nationwide run will feature live introductions and behind-the-scenes conversations.
From Ash To Pear Valley
Ernie & Emma follows Ernie Tyler, a small-town pear salesman mourning the loss of his wife, Emma. Before her death, Emma leaves detailed instructions about her ashes, sending Ernie on a road trip through Pear Valley, Oregon, that forces him to confront grief and find a way forward, according to the film’s official synopsis.
Campbell and his wife, Ida Gearon, made the project themselves, handling the scripting, directing, producing and financing, while the Oregon setting was filmed near Campbell’s home, CultureMap Austin reports. That gives the Austin screenings a different flavor from a standard studio release: Campbell is bringing the movie directly to audiences instead of waiting for a conventional distribution rollout.
A Tour Shaped By Health And Grief
Campbell’s Austin appearance also follows a major health update. He announced in March that he had been diagnosed with a type of cancer he described as treatable but not curable, and Forbes reported that he canceled convention appearances while focusing on treatment, with the fall film tour remaining part of his plans.
The tour’s official release says earlier independent-theater screenings in Medford, Portland, Boise and Detroit sold out, with the Detroit date ending in a standing ovation and Q&A, according to the tour release. Austin gets two chances to see the road-trip drama with Campbell in the room — and, for fans used to watching him battle demons, a chance to see what he does with grief instead.
