A storefront on Jericho Turnpike that has cycled through three different Vietnamese restaurants over the past six years has a new tenant: Pho Hanoi, which opened at 1200 Jericho Turnpike in New Hyde Park with a wraparound bar, a prominent alcohol program and a menu of pho, banh mi and bun salads.
A Bar-Forward Concept From a Brooklyn Nightlife Veteran
Owner Duke Quan is betting on Long Island after years running Vietnamese bars and restaurants in New York City, according to Newsday. Quan previously ran Duke's Dive Bar in the East Village and operated Bia — Vietnamese for beer — which had locations in Williamsburg and the Queens side of New Hyde Park. His Williamsburg outpost of Bia was a 55-seat spot with 15 draft tap lines, industrial auto-shop decor, a rooftop deck and dishes like bo kho oxtail stew, according to Time Out. Directory records from the New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce list Pho Hanoi under the corporate entity Teo Bia Corp, with Quan registered as company president.
That bar-first sensibility carries over directly into the new menu. Pho Hanoi features a prominent alcohol program built around drinks like the Saigon Sunrise, made with Malibu rum, citrus and strawberry syrup, and a spiked Vietnamese iced coffee priced at $12. The spiked coffee and specialty rum cocktails set the restaurant apart from the fast-casual banh mi shops that have typically defined the corridor, the Newsday report notes.
A Storefront With a Revolving Vietnamese Identity
The address has a well-documented history of turnover. Chef Billy Dang, the New York City chef behind Ha Long Bay Vietnamese Sandwiches, operated at the location starting in 2020 before expanding the brand to a second Great Neck location in December 2021, according to The Southerner. A partnership split then caused the location to change over to Pho Island, which opened at the address in 2024 with a ribbon cutting hosted by the New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, as reported by Patch. Pho Hanoi now occupies a space that has held three Vietnamese concepts over the past few years, making it the fourth Vietnamese banner at 1200 Jericho Turnpike since 2020.
Municipal records show the Village of New Hyde Park Board of Trustees unanimously approved a new restaurant permit for Pho Hanoi at its June 18 meeting, according to Citizen Portal, clearing the way for the opening ahead of this week's debut.
The Menu: Oxtail Stew, Curry Soup and Classic Banh Mi
On the food side, Pho Hanoi serves pho noodle soups, banh mi sandwiches and bun salads alongside two rotating soup specials: a bo kho oxtail stew and a coconut curry soup with vermicelli noodles. The bo kho, priced at $19, contains juicy oxtail in a beefy broth built from aromatics and hoisin sauce, and is often compared to French beef bourguignon. That comparison traces to real culinary history — Vietnamese cooks adapted French cooking techniques like beef bourguignon during colonization, incorporating local ingredients such as lemongrass, star anise and hoisin sauce, per Newsday's account. The classic banh mi, priced at $9.75, comes on crusty bread with pork pate and ham hock.
A Growing Asian Food Corridor
Pho Hanoi's arrival adds to a growing cluster of Asian eateries along Jericho Turnpike. Toronto-based Himalayan dumpling chain Momo2Go opened nearby at 231 Jericho Turnpike in June, a debut Hoodline previously covered. The demographics along the corridor help explain the demand: Asian residents make up roughly 34.2 percent of New Hyde Park's population and 51.9 percent of neighboring North New Hyde Park's population, according to U.S. Census estimates cited by World Population Review.
That growth comes against a backdrop of broader instability in Long Island's suburban dining scene. Nassau County has seen notable closures this year amid shifting commercial leases, including Hicksville's Sushi Village, which shut down after 14 years in business. Pho Hanoi is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., but is closed Monday. The restaurant can be reached at 516-216-1471.
