Arlington's back-to-school scramble got the full stadium treatment yesterday: thousands of students arrived at AT&T Stadium and left with backpacks, supplies, shoes, and fresh haircuts. Nearly 10,000 loaded backpacks were distributed, while a volunteer army and community vendors tackled the little expenses that can make August feel like a financial ambush. Classes begin Wednesday, so the timing was less football spectacle than logistical rescue mission.
According to CBS Texas, Arlington ISD families also visited nearly 100 vendors and community groups during the kickoff. Superintendent Matt Smith gave students a pep talk and credited more than 800 volunteers for helping pull off the massive event.
Nearly 10,000 Backpacks And A Career Lesson
Arlington ISD described the kickoff as a one-stop resource fair offering age-appropriate school supplies, dental and health screenings, haircuts, and information about after-school care. The haircuts were provided by students from the district's Career + Technical Center, and the event was reserved for students registered in Arlington ISD schools.
The haircut stations also gave students a chance to turn classroom training into real community service. CBS Texas spoke with 16-year-old rising senior Alyssa Davila, a Bowie High School student in Arlington ISD's cosmetology program, who was helping younger students get ready for class while working toward a cosmetology certificate. The station reported that more than 100,000 backpacks have been distributed through the event over the past 12 years.
More Back-To-School Help Is Coming To Tarrant County
The local back-to-school safety net does not end at the stadium gates. The City of Arlington says the 20th annual Tarrant County Back to School Roundup is scheduled for next Friday, offering qualifying families free supplies, backpacks, haircuts, health services, and community resources. Families must live in Tarrant County, meet the applicable income guidelines, and have completed the required preregistration.
Arlington Students Return Wednesday
The district calendar lists Wednesday as the first day of the 2026-27 Arlington ISD school year. For thousands of families, the stadium giveaway means one less shopping trip, one less bill, and a little more confidence when students walk through the classroom door.
