A 27-year-old woman was pronounced dead and a 45-year-old man remained hospitalized in critical condition after officers found both of them shot inside the front living room of a home in the 20 block of Market Street in Freemansburg Borough early Saturday morning. Police took a 27-year-old woman into custody at the scene, though no criminal charges had been filed as of Saturday.
Officers responded to a 911 call at around 6:09 a.m. and discovered the two victims suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Daily Voice. Local officers administered life-saving measures at the scene before EMS crews arrived and transported both victims to St. Luke's University Hospital in nearby Fountain Hill. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital at 7:16 a.m., while the man remained hospitalized.
As reported by NBC10 Philadelphia, police believe the 27-year-old woman taken into custody carried out the shooting, though investigators have not released the identities of either victim or the woman detained at the scene. That outlet's report notes that criminal charges are still forthcoming as the investigation continues.
Domestic Shooting Under Investigation by State Police
Local police updates described the shooting as domestic in nature, per Lehigh Valley Breaking News, which listed the address as 23 Market Street and reported the male victim was in critical condition. The homicide investigation is being led by the Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Major Case Team based in Bethlehem, with assistance from the Northampton County District Attorney's Office and the Northampton County Coroner's Office, the same report states.
Under Pennsylvania law, the Northampton County Coroner's Office is legally required to investigate all violent or sudden deaths and conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death. St. Luke's University Hospital's Bethlehem Campus, where the victims were treated, operates a Level I Adult Trauma Center with round-the-clock surgical critical care teams equipped to manage severe gunshot trauma.
Second Fatal Domestic Shooting for Troop M in Under a Month
This marks the second fatal domestic shooting investigated by Pennsylvania State Police Troop M in Northampton County in less than a month. On July 25, a 27-year-old man was fatally shot in Allen Township, and a 25-year-old suspect was taken into custody following a brief chase.
Freemansburg is a small borough of roughly 2,875 residents spanning just 0.75 square miles along the Lehigh River, according to the 2020 U.S. Census. Violent crime has been on the rise across Northampton County more broadly, with the county recording 212 reported violent offenses per 100,000 residents in 2022, a 17.8% increase since 2014, according to Data USA figures.
Once formal charges are filed, the suspect could face a range of criminal homicide charges under Pennsylvania law, from first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty, down to second- or third-degree murder or manslaughter, depending on what prosecutors determine about premeditation and intent. For now, key questions remain unanswered, including the identities of both victims and the suspect, the coroner's official cause and manner of death, and the current medical condition of the surviving man at St. Luke's Fountain Hill.
